This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I’m not sure any of us are familiar with the area... I might think of looking up Boarding Stables in the phone book and go visit a few, to find out who gives lessons, and which personalities might be the best match.
And welcome to the thread! :~)

Great pics! - Glad you all got to go for a ride! What was the ‘event’ that frog spoke of?
Is it just me having internet trouble this morning, or is it FR?
Aw geeze... how many time do I need to tell you I don’t know Iowa? Sorry bout that. Havin’ some issues here! :~)
I’ve had trouble getting pages to come up at all at times, but it seems to be ok right now.
Just got off the phone with the place that will spay feral cats. If we can trap her tonight, they'll take her, otherwise, they want to wait till Sunday night because they'll be closed Thurs and Fri of this week. So we'll try.
This is a low cost spay neuter clinic. If there's no complications, it'll be $66 to spay her, $25 for shots. If she's in heat or still engorged from nursing (which she shouldn't be, I'd think she'd be drying up by now) or already pregnant, it may be more depending, but it's probably as affordable as we'll get anywhere!
They'll do kittens at 13 weeks for $33 for males, $45 for females.
I've been going down that angle, just without being well versed in the business I always like to try and get advice from people who may be in the know in the area. Just taking a shot to see if I get lucky.
Thanks for the reply(ies)...
Event or Events? Take your pick:
I finally got the vet to say I could ride Faith after she tried to hack her leg off, and then she tore her shoe off and the farrier didn’t show up to fix her. Daisy went instead. We got there 6PM. Bladerider had truck issues (BF’s needed a part that had to be put on the day we left and then they had to jack up a trailer to get it on the truck). They were after 9:30PM.
Fri. AM Hal & I went to take a warmup spin around the camp road and Soldier hung his foot (BIGFOOT) in a pothole and knocked his shoe loose. No farrier on duty yet. The guys clenched it on the best they could.
We rode a 19.5 mile trail. Hal prized a fist sized rock out of Soldier’s big foot. Almost made it back before he lost the shoe. I saw it on the trail and the faster than Daisy horses met me coming back to look for it. BladeR loaned him a rubber bootie.
Farrier was back and reshod Soldier all the way around before dark. Hal was hosing him down and I heard pawing. I hollered for Daisy to stop and Hal looked and it was Elmo (Waterhead’s horse) rolling in the stall with his hooves hitting the walls. We walked him and he started eating grass. We ate supper, great open grilled food. More pawing, and Elmo was down again. Another shot, call to the vet over an hr. away. Poor Elmo got a tube up the front, sucked the gas out, mineral oil, water in, another shot and an arm up the rear. At least she was young and pretty, but expensive: $270. She didn’t know for sure if he colicked or tied up, so she treated him for both! She stayed till 10:30PM. He also had knots on both sides from the girth, but was better the next AM. Poor Waterhead didn’t sleep much due to checking on him. We measured all the horses the next day, just for curiosity’s sake and poor Elmo didn’t want that stick anywhere near him! He couldn’t imagine where it was gonna go!
Sat. AM Shane limping on Front. Gary doggy sat and slept and WH killed Indians (in his book). We rode 12.5 mi. Got another fist sized rock out of Blade’s foot. BF was getting SORE!!!
Back and cooled them off and Hal, Shirley, and WH on Daisy left at 1:30pm on a benefit ride with a big group for 2 hrs.
Abt. 5 the rest of us were going to ride & Spot (Shirley’s) had a tight belly and he thought she was gonna colic so he put her up. That left Soldier, Jake, & Blade. Daisy and Doc were healthy, but hang your head tired.
Me, Gary & BladeR. went out and 1st thing Jake hit his knees in a rocky ditch and bloodied them. Gary stayed on and he wasn’t limping, so we went on. That’s when we saw the deer in the field and it was a really pretty ride. Unfortunately, our last, ‘cause, not only were we running out of horses, it stormed and rained most of the nite and was still raining when we packed up and left Sun. AM.
We had a really good time inspite of it all!
Now, I have heat rash, tick bites, a broken toe, mosquito bites, bruises, and saddle sores. When and where do we go next!?!
This is kittens "please please please please let us oooooouuuut! We want ooooooooouut! Please?
Monster dash! Out! Wooo hoooo! Running!
Running ON things!
Climbing UP things!
Heh... big fun. I've got them back in the bedroom now so the dogs could be back in, it's rainin' out. They don't care where they are as long as they can run around. All the dogs seem OKAY with them, but it's just too many members of the food chain running around when they are all in here.
Aw jeeeze! That does sound like an eventful trip. Need a weekend to recover from a weekend like that!

Well put into that nut shell! Only thing I can add is I got stung by a wasp when I got home and have a very swollen, hot, itchy right hand!
Looks like Doc is doing a Hi Ho Silver imitation!
Yeah, I didn’t notice because I was trying to take pictures over my shoulder. His forelock is even standing straight up.
Wow, the kitten habitat is cool! Looks like a fun place for them to hang out.
And I was looking for a kitten in the “Climbing on things” picture and couldn’t find one for the longest time. You just don’t think to look for a kitten on top of a bear’s head! ;o) The only thing more fun than a barrel of monkeys is a house full of kittens!
Wow those pics are cool. That is a HUGE pipe sticking out of the ground. I think it would have given my Bay some amount of pause!
And I was trying to figure out the hi-ho moment with the big fallen tree, he looks like he just came out from under it, and I was thinking... no way!
It is a better than average kitten habitat, they love the things to climb on, they love the ropes. When they start playin’ too hard though, they need to come out and burn some real energy.
Oh - and the bear picture, I heard this plaintive mewing, and I couldn’t find him for the longest time, I didn’t look up there either. He wanted help down. ;~)
I don't know if I told you or not, but I had the mother dog spayed at a low cost clinic. We could not find anyone to take her (shelters/humane society) she came in heat and Rebel had his fun with her. That is all we needed was more puppies.
She has come in handy tied back by the barn, keeping the 'coons out. She really is a nice dog. Too bad, they abused her and she still is a little shy.
