Good Morning.

My friend who has the show Appaloosas, lost her weaning filly. She broke her shoulder at the trainers and had to be put down. The trainer had went to get her out of the stall and she reared up and came down on the hay rack. She had not been there that long and was still spooky in her new surroundings. The trainer felt awful and paid for the vet and burial. He was going to compensate my friend for her lost, but she refused.

A double bridle has two bits in the mouth... a simple snaffle, and a curb. The snaffle is a main rein, the curb brings the head down into a collected position and has more leverage. Advanced dressage riders use these for very fine control, as well as those who ride very hot show horse types... I used them on my English Pleasure Arabs.

Since it's four reins to manage instead of two, it adds a level of complexity.

Oh gosh, how sad. I feel bad for both the trainer and your friend, I’m glad it sounds like at least they are not at odds over it.

Yeah, I saw that, and you’re right, they did look pretty black and yucky all along the white line. So what are you seeing now that looks better? Is the blackness going away or what? How has he been walking? Any ouchiness?

He’s not doing a lot of running and romping yet, but he’s walking around pretty good out there.

I’m about to head out to treat it again.... I’ll show with pictures how it looks.

Wow! That was a lot of junk under those shoes.

Good you got them off so it could be treated directly. Hopefully it won't take long to clear up.

Do you have a positive diagnosis on it? Is it thrush, or some other sort of infection?

I’m treating it as if it’s thrush, but the TTO medicine is both antibacterial and antifungal, so either way... it’ll hopefully get it.

Good air circulation and medicine together should help a lot! Fresh air is good for almost everything.

Can you get shavings for his stall? That tends to keep their feet dry (in fact, it does such a good job that we have to watch our horses here for dry hooves . . . everybody here uses shavings because they are free from the lumber mills).

I use shavings when we bed the stalls, right now they are stripped to just the rubber mats because I’m actually encouraging them to get out of the barn and bed outside. They aren’t closed in at all.

I do bed it with shavings in winter when I want to give them a dry place to stand and lay down inside.

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry to hear this. We lost a weanling filly several years ago for the same reason - there just isn’t anything that can be done. Our filly slipped and fell on the ice (we think). Please give her my condolences.

Oh, my gosh, that's horrible news!

Sometimes horses just do stuff. We had a new horse at our barn break the crossties and run in a panic down the barn aisle, rear, slip on the concrete and flip over landing full on her head. Fractured skull, severe brain injury. There was nothing anybody could do.

Yeah - winter is the wet season around here :~) 9 months of wet, three months of drought is our norm :~)

Here’s the update... I’m really pleased.

Great! Whether it’s the treatment or the air . . . who cares? It’s looking so much better so quickly!

They really do look much better! A lot of the black is gone. But you have to wonder how much of that is due to the tea tree oil and how much is just due to the simple fact that he’s barefoot and the hoof is getting more air and is scrubbing on the ground and wearing it off. But whatever the reason, it looks better. Best not to look a gift horse in the mouth. ;o)

I think it’s both. I’m just glad it’s going to be easy to solve!

I will say that I was very skeptical about the Tea Tree Oil because it just sounds like herbal hippy stuff. I probably wouldn’t have taken it seriously if I wasn’t seriously concerned about how caustic that koppertox was and wanting to try ~anything~ else.

But I will say this, The TTO very potent stuff, you can tell. It’s very penetrating, I can tell when I put it on the foot, I can tell when I get it on my skin. It’s like DMSO, you can taste it. And it doesn’t wash off, I still smell like it now after washing my hands. I’m also told, by Sedona, that this is the good stuff, 100% TTO, and some of those that you buy cheaper are very dilute. I looked it up on the web, that little ounce bottle she gave me retails for $18. Yowsers!

Hello everyone...man it’s not fun being without internet:)

Hair: do you think you needed to pull the shoes now that you have seen his foot? I do think it will probably heal faster without, but looks like it was getting better.

Beaker, good luck on the job hunting.

MissTargets, Sorry about your friends foal...that would just be heart breaking.

I did ride yesterday...had a little incident. I had to ride off the trail because a car came down the road, when I was coming back out onto the trail, Harley felt like he was jumping around, when I looked down I noticed he was holding a back foot up. I jumped off and found a finishing nail in his frog. Not far but enought that one drop of blood came out when I pulled the nail out. I went ahead and rode just a bit. He didn’t seem sore at all. When I got back home I cleaned it out, and did some peroxcide...I don’t think that really did anything but I didn’t know what else to doctor it with. You couldn’t hardly see the hole, it closed up. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it doesn’t abccess. Anyone have any suggestions?

Becky

TTO is pretty potent. Jenny uses it sometimes on us to shampoo our heads with. It really tingles:)
