FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Yeah but seriously I do have a problem. I’ve been leaving the garage cracked for her. A few other strays are coming to eat now. That’s why I brought her in so I could close it. I don’t want animals to go hungry but I can’t let them turn the garage into a cat house, either. I’m thinking about just putting some food out in the back corner of the yard for who wants it.

Just putting out some food and water in the yard sounds better, providing that you don’t have wild critters - possums and raccoons that you’ll be feeding. No - I wouldn’t let the whole town’s population of strays move into the garage either.

I fell asleep too :) so I would have missed the pictures if you had posted them. I’ll check back here later today.

Well I’m glad to hear that it wasn’t your kitty. Also glad to hear that the vet said that EPM wasn’t much of a problem in your area. Soaking the pitchfork in bleach is a good idea. That’ll kill most anything that may be on it.

I can’t believe you got snow! That’s awful! Hopefully it’ll warm up and be gone soon.

I’m glad to hear that you’re having fun getting into the family business. That’ll be a big help to Charlie.

I sure hated to hear about Rowdy. I’ve known several horses around here that have died from EPM. I HATE possums!

Glad to hear they’ve gotten started on your ceilings too. That and some fresh paint will give the house a whole new look.

Good evening.

The 4 bedrooms, and 2 baths are done...what a mess, but most of it is cleaned up now, and the difference that the new ceilings make is incredible. He will come and do the rest of the house next weekend. A few pictures.

Shannon spraying the mud.

My computer after the scraping.

Shannon running the shop vac cleaning the debris from the floor. I came behind him with my vac to pick up the finer dust...I think I'll being doing that for the next week as it all settles from the air.

The canister for the shop vac is a 55 gal. drum, he swept up almost 1/2 a can full.

An an interesting off topic picture. Yesterday when he was out smoking he picked this and gave it too me...its a "5" leaf clover. I've never seen or even heard of one of those:)

Very big mess! Ack! But it will look good!

No, we dont’ have snow... today’s been mostly nice!

Dad and Ramius came down this morning and took us to the casino for a wonderful brunch and then we gambled a bit, won some and lost some, and then came back here.

For our birthdays, they gave us some neat things, including a food vacuum sealer so we can buy the big bonus packs of meat and freeze portions easy. It’s cool! ecurbh’s sealing things right now.

Boy what a mess it makes. Of course, my computer looks like that too but it’s just cobwebs :)

A very cool five leaf clover - time to buy a lottery ticket.

Ah Ha - a vaccumn sealer. Time to plant a garden - you can freeze up a ton of vegetables for winter :)

Hi everyone. I’m new to this thread but I could use some support and advice.

I’ve worked in the horse business for years, I was the breeding manager for two top U.S. stallions, Guarantor (Han.) and Puritano (West.), Puritano was my favorite horse ever, but you don’t want to ride that boy. Sadly, he died last year.

I was always a decent rider, never an excellent rider and I gave away my last horse. (PSG, but I never rode him above 2nd level.) I’ve trained a lot of horses, but barely to training level. I can collect semen, pack it and ship it around the world. That’s pretty much my legacy around here, I can (or could) handle almost every stallion.

Now, here’s my problem. My ex-boss (Jayne Ayers, the former owner of my boys) has given me permission to ride any of her school horses.

I want to but I’m scared to death, I’m 56 and haven’t been on the back of a horse in 5 years but I so want to ride. The barn manager is a good friend and I know she;ll put me on the right horse but I’m still afraid to mount a horse after all these years.

I didn’t mean to brag about my experience, I mentioned it because I used to get on anything and now I’ve got this fear about even getting on any horse.

I have never been afraid of riding any horse, now I’m wary of getting on a even a pony. I hate being such a wuss.

Hi and welcome. Just go and be around them a bit. Work with them a little and get your feel back. No rush to just get on and ride before you’re ready. :~)

Thanks for replying, I feel like such a chicken. Horses have been my life and now I’m afraid to get on one. Maybe if I start with grooming...
I’m a good groom.
I love you chestnut btw! Very nice horse.

I only have one disc loaded tonight and they aren't in order. This is one of my favorites though. It reminded me of pictures that you see of ice fishing. It looks cold but it's sand and in the 80's

Got a little spooked here. We walked quite a ways back. No one around. I left everything locked up in the truck including my purse. I noticed a car pull up and 2 people were by my truck and one seemed to be looking in the window. I started back and they stood there. As I got closer they went to the bed and then got in their car and pulled behind my truck. They drove off as I got closer. Maybe they were just innocently seeing the sites but it rattled me. You think about the what ifs later but in hindsight it probably wasn't a good idea for us to be out there by ourselves. I was sure wishing I had my gun but I probably would have had that locked in the truck too!

Okay - I have a question. (Don’t I always?) My husband wants me to research costs of round pens. Probably semi-permanent, so I’m guessing the metal sections would be the best option. What have you found to be the easiest to construct, other pros and cons, etc.?

I hope I don’t remind you guys of someone asking for advice and never heeding it. I asked about a saddle and got some great ideaa, but due to costs I ended up buying a synthetic western. I needed a full quarter horse bar with a 15 inch seat, so I ordered one from a local tack shop here and it will do for now.

Also fell off again yesterday. My horse is usually spook-proof but Hannah’s isn’t, and she spooked first and backed into mine and ...the rest is history. I hit the ground on my behind in my own front yard after he spun around. My husband came out the kitchen door and Cheyenne thought he was a monster. Creeping around today. My husband said be glad you didn’t hit the driveway or the rock wall of the flower bed.

Welcome.

I'm 51 and just started riding again. And you have way more knowledge than I ever hope to have. I was scared scared scared to ride.

I took riding lessons again and that helped me. The instructor was kind of inattentive, and always on her cell phone, so every week for months at a time we did the same thing, walk, trot, lope, change direction, repeat, etc. My daughters hated it because they wanted to move on, do more exciting stuff, but it was great for me, because I got over the fear part.

So now, we've stopped the lessons for me and my older daughter has changed instructors and is advancing with more focused instruction.
