This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Wow... is this an orientation thing... or just on the job?
Just got in from choir practice and got a call from my daughter.
She applied for a spot on the equestrian team at her college. They told her that the team was full, but she could try out and train with the team, and be a substitute if they needed her. When she was home on spring break, she came out to the barn and took a private lesson with our trainer (she rode the Big Dumb Blond) to sort of get tuned up for her team tryout which was this afternoon.
Well . . . it's an understatement to say it went well. She said the test was pretty tough, a lot of ground work and some lateral work (we went over that last week!) and then successively more difficult jumping. The team coach basically went into raptures over her equitation . . . "Who's your trainer? How long have you been riding?" and said that they would MAKE a place on the first string for her. She's fortunate to have the perfect body for equitation - skinny, with nice long legs and a relatively short upper body.
So I'm going to tell our trainer all about it! I know she'll be pleased.
Of course, this means we have to send her good Melton hunting coat, ratcatcher shirt, stock, and leather breeches to the cleaners and send them back with her over Easter break . . . . I guess hunting attire will be o.k. at a hunt seat show!
< /proud mama brag > I knew it was worth it looking high and low for the best trainer in town! We've been with her for over twelve years, I think daughter was about 7 when she started. The trainer still has the little pony that was daughter's first mount, and he's still carrying kids around and giving them fits . . .
Congratulations - have fun, otherwise it’s just a job.
Personality conflicts are the hardest to deal with - it seems there is just no win situation there. I sure wish you luck.
That’s fantastic :) And definately worth a proud momma brag. Tell her to get pictures for all of us and that we are rooting for her.
That's her in front, on the red roan, trying to get her drill team lined up before they start . . . .
I’ll be looking forward to pictures of her and the team.
Congratulations to your daughter (and you):’)
Congratulations to your daughter:)...Sounds like it would be a fun and exciting team to be on, and definitely something a mother should brag about!!

Hey, that’s exciting about all the progress you’re making with getting stuff sold and the design on the new apartment, not to mention the new job!! The apartment sounds nice. I like lots of windows to.
That sounds like so much fun. If my child was in sports, that would be the most gradifying one to me, not to mention the most expensive!!
Kudos to her.
My gray mare is dropping and her bag is really filling out and she is tender. She is not really due till 4/1, but it is her 1st. Any advice or opinion. I am getting the filly that we put up with her out this pm. She was just too upset to leave her by herself. Hal says she is not eating as much either. She is on Mare & Foal and was eating when I left this AM. I know most of the time they are born at night.
Congrats to you and your daughter!
Rain here today... going to work on the half of yesterday’s to-do list that I didn’t get to.
Stripping the pony’s stall is first.
Sounds like soon! What are you unsure on?
Your apartment plans sound cozy and pretty. Hope you get your house sold soon. Good luck with the fix ups. Sounds like a mess, but will be worth it.
Glad you are riding.
We went for 3 hrs. yesterday up the back side of the mountain and a loop up from a friends house. There were 4 of us. I rode B/W Daisy 1st time since 12/7/07 in the Christmas parade when a high school kid rode her. She did really good. She gaits smoother than my Champagne, Faith. Wish I could get her as good.
Hal and 5 old men took their horses to Tenn. this am to ride all day. I had to stand in the driveway and watch him drive off and then go to work. Oh, well. Maybe someday!!!
About how long it will be, mostly. I know you dip the navel in Betadine ASAP. I’m just really nervous ‘cause I haven’t had one in 18 years and lost 3 due to various ignorant things. You seem to be having sucess with yours this year!!! Great.
Not me! I don’t have any babies... Though I’ve been around for the process. Duchess does, and you’ve got Frog, who’s certainly raised a lot of them!
I’d be nervous and excited too, I sure hope all goes well for you.
Sounds like she could go at any time. Just keep an eye on her. At least you’ve got Hal there while you’re at work. Most of mine have been born during the day. You’re right about the iodine on the navel. I’ve found it easier to put it in a small spray bottle and just spray it once or twice a day for a couple of days. I always get a tube of pro-bios and give them some of that about every other day. If the mare’s milk is real rich they may get the scours and if they do you can get a tube of stuff that’s like immodium and between the two of those that’ll pretty much take care of that. JB carries both. You need to find the placenta and spread it out and make sure that it’s pretty much all there, just so you know that she didn’t retain it, but if she foals by herself, she may eat it so you may not find all of it. I kind of like to give them a shot of occytocin after they foal. That’ll put them into contractions again for an hour or so and clear out anything that may be left in the uterus so they don’t get an infection. But that’s just me. You give occitocin in the vein, in the same place where you’d draw a coggins from. You can get that from JB too.
