This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Ambient, believe it or not. -20 is more typical, but we usually have a few seriously cold nights, usually in mid-January.
But my guess is that -30 in ND would feel a lot colder than -30 in Vermont. There’s just nothin’ to block the wind! Brrr....
I’m from a part of the state that gets the coldest temperatures, though, for whatever reason. The good ol’ Northeast Kingdom.
Good Morning:)
Very cold here with a dusting of snow. I’m calling the farrier and canceling...no way I’m standing in this to shoe a horse...
By Sunday it will be back up around 70...
Becky
I don't blame you, especially since you don't really HAVE to. It'd be miserable for you and the farrier both.
I'm ready for SPRING! It's been warm enough here lately that the pansies I planted last fall are finally looking halfway decent. I've got one of those Miracle Grow sprayer things and need to fertilize them but I've had the hose disconnected and the faucet covered up to keep it from freezing and it's too big a pain to undo all that and then have to put it back. We might yet have some freezing temps before it's overwith.
Hey there... I was just hearing about it too and wondered if we’d heard from you since the earthquake!
Good morning!
I can’t imagine a farrier would come on a day like that. What weird weather for you to have that much swing.
If I had a 70 degree day I would give my horse a BATH.
Good morning!
I don’t know, the water coming out of the hose would still be pretty cold...and with all the winter coat, it would take a lot of hosing to get them wet.
Becky
Yeah - you’re right, but I just can’t wait for the first day I can get away with a bath. Bay is shedding and muddy and a mess.
Oh, and that much swing in temperatures, this time of year is not that weird for us.
Becky
We were up most of the night with Homer whining and pacing. Can’t tell what his problem is. He’s not right in the head!
Well, he’s never really been right in the head, but maybe he thinks you’re about to have an earthquake or something.
If there is some explanation for it we’d take it.
He just whines and climbs on us and wakes us up. Then he’ll lay down for a while, then all of the sudden he’s in a panic again. Sometimes they’re firing at Fort Lewis and that’s what’s bothering him, but last night there was nothing like that!
Sounds like he needs to sleep in the crate in another room at night. Either that or give him one of his doggie downers before you go to bed tonight so you can all get some sleep.
I think he would just cry. He’s really just seeking some kind of reassurance. It’s irritating after awhile, but I feel sorry for the guy. If it’s not itching, it’s some need he can’t articulate, but it’s always something. He’s sleeping now. ecurbh wants me to keep him awake all day so he’s tired tonight.
Doggie downers yes! We’ve got some herbal downers we got as a free sample that have tryptofan in them. Going to give him some tonight and see.
I did give him 3 benadryl last night.
Oh my, that would be annoying...I think I’d crate that dog.
Becky
I think we’d just drive him insane if we tried to separate him from us.
When ecurbh’s being crabby he says he wants to put him down.
Well, he is big enough, and has enough of a coat that as warm as you are saying it is put him out in the barn in the crate. After a while he will get use to it and you can bring the crate in the house. From what I’ve been told dogs start to look upon their crates as a safe zone to go.
Becky
I’d put him down before doing that to him. He’d just turn on himself.
He’s in a panic. He’s climbing all over us because he has these needy anxiety attacks. If we aren’t here when he panics like that, he chews holes in himself.
He’s got mental issues. Normal dogs adapt to crating. Insane ones I think would just get more insane.
