FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

We’ve had sporadic water issues... one time the pump froze... not sure what the short outages the last couple days was about... maybe he had to shut it down to work on something. There’s no shutoff for any of us, so if anyone does plumbing work, we all get shut down.

Normally though, they’ll call if they’re doing it on purpose.

Well, Chester is still hanging around.

Glad to hear it. Safest to be in at night. He's a smart kitty.

I’m glad to hear Chester is still around.

Hope you get to the barn on Friday.

Should be a tracking club located somewhere reasonable near you . . . they're all over. I live in a major metro, which is good for obedience and agility but bad for retriever and tracking (they need lots of open land). But there are retriever and tracking clubs here . . . we just need to go further out to get to enough land.

Check the AKC and the UKC for member clubs. I've found it extremely useful to train with like-minded people. (And for retrieving it is absolutely necessary -- you can't handle a young dog and throw the ducks too!)

Thx, Beaker. I’ll keep an eye on the thread, but no, do not add me to the ping list right now. :-)

Greetings all. Still here, still a-lurking.

My task for the next two weeks is to put my donkey on a diet.

I have been lazy and feeding him with the other two horses and he is about to founder. I guess I will keep him up at the corral near the house and reduce him to hay and try to walk him in the round pen and suffer his incredible steam-whistle braying for food.

His previous owner could just grab a hank of his mane and swing herself up (he was bareback). But then she was a 20 something girl, and I’m a grandmother. LOL

Good luck! Here are some links:

The United Kennel Club Cur & Feist Hunting Program . They have a section devoted to the Black-Mouth Cur!

AKC Tracking Program. There is a directory of member clubs. Unfortunately doesn't appear to be an AKC tracking club in MS - there's a directory on that page. But I bet there are some under another organization. Find a couple of local dog trainers and start asking around.

I think when MM first started posting he said that he was currently living in TX, so there may be some tracking clubs there.

...she almost gets stuck so it's hard to get out of...

I think that's part of the reason for having them do it, they're not as likely to walk off when they're in that position.

I think AAM is probably right on this one, but another thing that may help is one of those "Tacky Too" pads. They have a waffle-weave neoprene on the bottom that really seems to make the saddle stay in place. BladeRider has one for both of her horses and really brags on them.

We have them and like them alot. They help the saddle stay in place, keep moisture away from the back and are easy to clean. Jake has a really high wither and these seem to fit his back better.

Do you feel really secure in that saddle?

I have a Royal King Adjustable tree saddle and I love it. IT is western and the tree adjusts to fit a broad horse or a narrow horse. My only complaint is it is heavy.

Gosh, I guess hunter riders don't have to worry about heavy -- there's just not much to our saddles at all.

I looked on the Ortho-Flex website, and they have a nice looking hunter saddle on consignment. It's not cheap -- and my Courbette is a fine saddle, but I wonder . . . . < me getting into trouble >

Well good luck with the donkey. I know how aggravating all that can be coz I have to deal with it every day with my old gelding. He was very lame to start, but after I got his weight down two or three hundred pounds he's much better. I'm sure he'd rather be out on the pasture with all the others and not be on such a restricted diet, but we gotta do what we gotta do. But at least he doesn't bray! ;o)

I just thought of something funny.

I'm going to start calling my Black Lab "the Black Mouth Cur Dog" - that oughta make her mad! She has the blackest mouth you ever saw - her gums are all black and she even has a black spot on her tongue. Those beautiful pearly-white fangs really do stand out against all the black . . . .

Yeah, EBay can give you a good idea of what stuff is WORTH, as opposed to what it COSTS . . . . < g >

I have been burned once using PayPal, so I am a little leery of using EBay - I never have. Have you had good experiences?
