This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
LOL - if I’d paid attention to you previous post I’d have figured that out :) I logged on real quick at work (had to work today) and was in a big hurry. And that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
The pictures are great - Ruby sure goes in with great enthusiasm.
Bob and Janelle went back to work with pheasents. Blue did great as always, Belle headed back to the truck with the first shot. Bob says she works ducks and water with no problem, guns don’t bother her at all. He thinks she dislikes working dry land and rough terrain (?) Anyway, I had pheasent for dinner and eleven more in the freezer.
I’m hoping Janelle took some pictures today, I haven’t heard yet.
Shelley has been called a "Buckhead girl" (local toney suburb) because she doesn't like to sit in the mud. And today Ruby decided in the middle of a longish (80 yards maybe) water retrieve that it would be a good idea to drop the bumper off on a handy island and come on back without it . . . we threw rocks at it until she went back out and got it. Although she did try to DIVE for the rocks before she decided to pick up the bumper. Otherwise, I was going to have to swim out for it, and it was a little chilly for a swim . . . if you're not a Lab . . . . Actually I would have gone back to the truck for Shelley, she's a great pickup dog and spots bumpers or birds in a heartbeat.
They all have their idiosyncrasies . . .
My husband didn't even catch Ruby at the height of her leap (even though he missed her head. I told him he has to turn the camera sideways to have a hope of catching Ruby, she is just so fast). She has a heck of a water entry. Shelley does the "September morn" . . . she trots down to the edge of the water and sort of slips in delicately . . . .
LOL yes Ruby does have a heck of a water entry.
I don’t know what’s going on with Belle since I’m never there to see it, but I suggested that part of it might be he is pushing her too fast. That went over like a lead balloon of course.
You have a couple of great dogs right there! :-)
Good morning. STill very cold, and rainy...
AAM Great pictures:). Looks like fun.
The next few days here are going to be busy busy. Today, church, and a kids (great niece) birthday party...Tomorrow, an appointment with the accountant, I’ll be so glad to get this done, then I have to get the oil changed in my truck, and see if I can get it in for tune up, it’s really sucking the gas...
I found out Fri night, that an aunt of mine, (my mothers only sibling) passed away. So Tues. I have to go to Wichita Ks. for a funeral...I think 2008 is not going to be a rough year:\ (I have another aunt, my dads only remain sibling that is failing)...one good thing tho, my brother will be coming in and is going to ride with me. It will be nice having time to visit with him. I didn’t get to much when he was here for Mack. We are all happy tho...he’s coming home in April for good:). He’s lived and worked in Vegas for about 12 years, has had his fill of being away, wants to come home to see his grandbabies grow up. THAT is something really good to look forward too:)
Becky
not=well shouldn’t even be there:)
Yep....2008 is going to be a bad freaking year...@$#^!&*&$(*$%$#@@...
Just went out to doctor Harley and feed...Harley has cut himself, his right front pastern...it doesn’t look real serious, but with all the wet, and mud, and cold....I didn’t even look at it close, I just can’t deal with it right now...from the looks of it, it looks like the dirt at the back of his stall caved in and his foot went under the edge. With all the rain, the dirt at the back of the barn has washed away, so the dirt in the stall has nothing to hold it...this is just getting to be too much..
Becky
So you all don’t think I’m a completely irresponsible horse owner, and so you don’t worry about him...I called Charlie and he is going to come up here sometime this morning to doctor the horse.
Becky
Oh dear... just catching up. I am sorry about Harley’s foot. I sure hope it isn’t serious.
And it is good news about your brother. I’m glad there is some good news in all that. I am sorry about your Aunt.
I am in search of some coffee now.
Try not to let the accumulation of stuff get you down (that's easy for ME to say!) Just deal with 'em one at a time. We're thinking of you.
Indeed. Indeed. Becky, I hope you can catch a break.
AAM, great pictures... looks like fun!
It’s good news about your brother although I’m sorry to hear about your aunt I hope you and he have a chance to just catch up and visit.
Bob has a favorite saying of his grandfather’s that I think about on days like you are having today. “There’s nothing you can do but throw up your hands in holy horror” - I don’t know why that appeals to me, but some days there’s just too much.
Any chance that the kids can take the horses to their place for awhile? Meanwhile, Harley will be fine - hit the cut with some bleach or peroxide next time you treat his foot and pull a Scarlet O’Hara - I’ll think about that tomorrow.
And today - don’t do anything that doesn’t just have to be done.
I was thinking about this . . . she may have a personality like Shelley's. She's a very 'soft' dog -- I think the boys tend to be a little harder-headed than the girls, though there are always exceptions. (Ruby being Exhibit "A"). If you push Shelley too hard, she just shuts down. Some will just flee if you push too hard. Sounds like pressure may be causing her to bolt.
There are a couple of good books on training - like Top Dog for example - that talk about bolting and how to cure it. Mostly, back the pressure off.
Beautiful dogs! Labs are among the best.
Well, Friday is bagging up and starting to loosen up around her tail. I never could get a breeding date on her but she didn’t go over to the breeder until Sam was 3wks old so it had to have been after March 21st. I’m figuring she’s due between Feb 27 and March 6.
Anyway, today, we also palpated Tyke, she’s confirmed pregnant :) Janelle says it’s a spotted foal. She and Farah aren’t due though until the first of April.
We’ve lost two more chicks, all Aracaunas. I think there was something wrong with that hatch.
Tuffy is back up to halter weight. Everybody is still wooly, no shedding yet.
So - you can tell after doing taxes I escaped to the outdoors. It’s sunny but cold here. I was so frustrated with taxes and tax law and Turbo Tax and the IRS I was ready to scream. I am amazed at how much tax we have to pay, and then pay some more. And really depressed about how much money went into horses. I sure do love them but we have got to find a registered stock sale and take a bunch. We can’t continue doing this or I’ll have to still be working when I’m 70yrs old.
Okay, end of rant. Guess I’ll get my rearend in gear and do some housecleaning.
Ah well, too many or not we can at least look forward to babies. :~)
We worked outside too. It was probably too cold for some of you southerners to think it was good outdoor weather, but it was sunny and springlike so we raked up all the winter down limbs and cleaned up all the debris we swept off the roof yesterday and now we’re ready to replant the lawn as soon as it warms up.
Then we did three dog baths. All of them seem to benefit from a weekly medicated bath for one reason or another and we’ve been trying to keep up with that.
Oh I envy you your energy, clean yard and clean dogs :)
The weather is nice if you’re working in it and it is a beautiful day overall.
Oh I hope Chester gets back tonight. Let us know, okay?
It sounds like they didn’t put enough oil in doesn’t it?
Friday was leased by a lady I know and her partner to breed to one of their stallions. We went out to see her about three months later and found her skin and bones so we brought her back home. The foal won’t be ours (I hope) but due to the hard feelings, I never could get the *&%^$ idiots to give me a breed date.
Tyke is the mare that is solid, not sound, and we weren’t sure she took. She was bred to Tuffy, but didn’t take, then bred to Sonny and did. And Farah was bred to Sonny again. Neither of the two were bred with my blessings since we still have last year and the year before’s foals.
Tuffy will be competing again at halter this year. He will still compete under saddle, just a bit heavier than working weight.
