FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Our new chicks came yesterday. I've never had problems with McMurray Hatchery before but this time three arrived dead, I've since lost two more and another two look ill. The pictures just don't do them justice but I didn't want to lift any of them up and stress them since I'm having problems with this flock.

Oh how cute! I’m sorry you’ve lost some, though.

Thanks. We’re totally mystified as to why we’re losing them - it’s never happened before.

Several years ago I ordered geese from them. One was a bit puny. Could they have gotten too cold? I know they pack them in there pretty tight - maybe a rough trip? -- I don't know, I'm just guessing.

Hope they all make it. :-)

So far that’s all we can think of is that they got too cold at one point. It seems to be the Aracaunas that we are losing, not the Brahmas.

So - what is the horse’s name? And I’m sure you told us what he is but I can’t remember. Senior moment or long day at work :)

The Aracaunas — aren’t they the ones who lay the blue? eggs? Or am I thinking of another breed?

Yep, the blue and green eggs. Kids all love seeing them - everyone wants to gather eggs when they come over. And they seem to be the only fresh eggs I can boil and peel for deviled eggs without them coming apart.

Oh that's okay - I didn't say -- His name is Beau. He is the own son? (all these equine terms are very new to me) of Paso de Noches? A distant relative was at the barn yesterday when I rode him, and he said he thought it meant "I'll pass on the Nachos". :-) I know the Noches part means "night".

I tried to do a search on some of the breed sites but couldn't find out anything about that particular (quarter) horse.

I’m sure the children do love them - I know my grandchildren would. :-)

They’re cute! What kind of chickens are they? I’m still taking care of the trainer’s chickens, of which she has... many. :-)

He’s a beautiful horse. Sometimes you can find information on allbreedpedigree.com but as long as he suits you, it really doesn’t matter :) except for curiousity’s sake.

Thanks. I’ll look there. It would be interesting to know a bit about his pedigree, I guess.

We had the geese when I was homeschooling. Here's a picture when they were babies -- don't they look sweet and innocent?

Photobucket

And here's a picture when their true personalities emerged. They were geese, after all. I think she's saying "put your hand in here and I'll bite it off!"

I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!

I just think this one is kinda cute.

LOL Growing up we had geese - they scared me almost to death. They used to chase me and hiss and peck at me. I’m not real fond of them. And the chickens would peck me when I gathered eggs and the rooster would attack me with his spurs. I was a real wimp and all the barnyard knew it.

I left the farm and swore I would never go back. Just goes to show, never say never.

The “cute” one in the third picture looks like a cool goose, like he wouldn’t hiss at you but would ask for treats instead.

They would ALL bite. LOL I don't blame you for being afraid of them when you were little. They can really hurt when they bite. My daughter came in with a bruise once - and they beat at you with those wings, yikes!

Those roosters are the worst, though -- especially to children, I think. There was one at our barn who chased me when I got off the school bus in the afternoons. It turned into a special kind of torment - the other kids would watch me get off the bus and run home with the rooster flying behind me.

My dad had one of the farm hands take the rooster down the road and separate him from his head.
