FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Since we're kinda quiet this morning (except for me rattling on), I'll post some pics of Saturday's ride...

The campground. Not much shade but well layed out...

One of the barns. There were stalls on the inside and outside of both sides of the isle and there were 3 of these barns. Lots of stalls!...

The inside...

What a lot of the trails looked like...rocks, rocks rocks...

A nice pic of Blade...

BladeRider's husband Gary and Shane. Gary is over 6' tall so Shane is a big ol' hoss!...

Me and Hope...

More rocks, and even the borium shoes didn't help on these. They were all limestone and slick as glass. You really had to be careful...

That's a LOTTA horse to let get a head of steam, especially in English tack!

It is! And I didn't really realize it until then. My brain was going: "Abort! Abort!" :-D How big is Tennessee?

He’s only 16.2 but sometimes it seemed like a mile, especially when you were stretching to get on.

Those are some great pictures! Do you have to pay extra to use the stalls?

Yeah, but I’m not sure how much. I just day rode and that was $15, but I remember BladeRider saying that it was $44 for their campsite and two stalls, so that ain’t TOO bad. You’re required to rent a stall for each horse if you camp because there’s a fairly busy 2-lane highway that runs right outside the campground and part of the trails are on the other side. I guess they didn’t want to take the chance of a tied horse getting loose and getting hit.

My in-laws live in Abilene, it’s very flat and you can see for miles there, too. It’s really beautiful at night, the stars are incredible.

Killeen is pretty. Was your son stationed at Fort Hood?

Becky, I probably won’t come. My daughter will be home from college that weekend and I just have too much going on. Wish I could, I’ll be jealous thinking about you guys. Be sure and take lots of pictures.

Hey Frog, I’m sorry I haven’t been around much, I just don’t feel very horsey lately. Since Tuffy’s gone I really just don’t care about my horses anymore. I’m sure I’ll get the feeling back someday so I’m not selling any of my other horses. I’m sending Mina to a trainer as well. I still take good care of them, I feed them and brush them every day and play with Mina but my heart isn’t in it.

I’ll take some pics of my decorations, they are funnier this year. I put more hanging things in the trees and it’s cute. One of my kids asked me why I don’t put up scarier stuff but I didn’t tell her why. I’ll tell you guys, though. Ever since those poor American hostages got their heads cut off in Iraq and it was filmed I just can’t go with the gory decorations anymore. Know what I mean? I saw part of the Daniel Pearl video and one of the others and some of those decorations are just too realistic. Am I making sense?

I felt the same way when I was on my way to your wedding! Little ol’ me...off on an adventure in the world!

It was fun, but I’m glad you’re coming to my neck of the woods this time! Heh heh!

What time will I be doing this adjusting to Dot? The jedis finish with school at lunchtime...sometime around then?

Give me a basic itinerary for what you have planned so I can plan around it. (I think you did once, but maybe things are solidifying as the time draws nigh.)

Do you need any help with anything?

It makes complete sense on both counts.

While I hope you get it back, I understand the grief. I don’t look forward to it.

Frog... great trail pictures... But not great trails! ouch. Lots of rocks is right!

Feel free to talk to yourselves today, I’m a little busy but I will eventually reply :~)

Well, I understand. You and Tuffy had a special bond. Part of you is gone now and you can't just replace that overnight. Give yourself some time. It'll come back. But spend as much time as you can getting to know Mina. That'll help fill the hole faster, even if you feel like you're just going through the motions right now.

Thanks, ya’ll. I really, really appreciate the support.

I like Mina, she’s sweet and funny but I don’t get the same feeling from her that I got with Tuffy. In my experience, mares aren’t as loving and affectionate as geldings.

I must admit, I do go through the horse ads on www.agdirect.com and in the advanced search section I always put in “at least 2 years old, 15.3 or taller, APHA paint, gelding.” One of these days something is gonna come up that is Tuffy the Second without the health issues. I can wait years to find him.

See, that's funny that you said that because I was just thinking the opposite. All my mares are just big ol' love bugs. They like nothing better than to stand there and let you love on them all day long. But you're right that the geldings seem to have a certain something. In Bob and Blade and Tennessee, it was a kind of curiosity and a mischievousness, a DennisTheMenace quality, that I find hard to resist. But then maybe I'm just addicted to trouble. ;o)

That’s EXACTLY it, a Dennis the Menace quality. Tuffy had that in spades. It was irresistable. He was always game to learn something new, too, as long as it wasn’t too strenuous. Mina doesn’t have that quality, although she can do anything, no matter how strenuous and is happy to work for sugar cubes.

LOL! Yep, I could tell that he did, just from his pictures. And I'm sure some of the "games" he wanted to play weren't always exactly the kind you wanted to play either. Lord knows Bob's ALWAYS playing some kine of game, whether you know it or not. Keeps you on your toes.

Hello, everyone...

Frog,&MT, as the the time gets closer and you for sure know how you will be coming into OK. I can give you better directions, and if we need to talk we’ll call. But mapquest definitely doesn’t give the best directions from the OK lines on.

Frog great pictures:)

2J, since it seems to be cooling off some, there won’t be such a rush to get the horses rode so early, I was actually thinking of having you meet us in town for breakfast on the 17th then coming on out and riding. But I think we can manage going a bit later in the day. I doubt we will be up and around all that early on that morning:)

Here’s the tentative activity schedule that I have any additions and subtractions according to others desires is fine by me.

Tues. Hair arrives late so nothing but supper and visiting.
Wed. ride, eat out, visit, wait on MT.
Thurs. visit the saddle shop, my kids place, see 2J’s bug:), wait on Frog and Blade.
Fri. short rides, visit, supper at Scott’s and play at our building down town.
Sat. ride in the morn. take a lunch break ride in the afternoon, bonfire and cookout.
Sun. Breakfast in town, pumpkin patch, hike to caves, visit, maybe short ride, and farewell dinner at Los Cabos on the river.
Mon departure:(.

2J I hope you make it to all of the activities.

Becky
