FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

No I don't want a donkey! lol There are just too many animials here as it is. When we have the garage sale next week, I am going to try and sell the hamster. The rabbits should go too, but Alison would have fits.

Amy and I were at the sale all day. Found a really nice Western Pleasure mare. 3 yo AQHA, sorrel. She was super nice and he no saled her at $3350. He wanted $3500. The rest of the horses there were mostly junk. Lots and lots of no sales. No one was buying, even though the place was packed.

LOL - I never thought of that. I wonder if it’s possible to sell horses at a garage sale?

Is Amy looking for another horse since she sold Biscuit, or were you just window shopping?

Hello everyone.......
WE FINALLY MADE IT TO AIKEN.....this was definitely one for the books..the trip from hell. My husband was pulling the tractor behind his truck and I followed. My cell phone died midway and we got separated ...that took about two hours of our time. Long story but a ten hour trip took us 16 hours.
But we are here and doing our walkthrough tomorrow. Our furniture is arriving on Wednesday and Waylon on Friday.

I am really excited about this new chapter in my life and can’t wait to get back on here on a regular basis...I miss it!!!

Well, I just got out the calendar, and it was 6 wks this past Thurs that the shoes were put on...so they did at least stay on for the 6 wk period. The farrier is coming this week...we scheduled it for 6 wks from when Rocky was shod, and he was shod the week after Harley.

We went to a horse show today, that is holding a winter series. Dakota and Amy showed Chaser. Amy won two pleasure classes and Dakota placed in two. When Dakota was showing, he went to put him into a lope and Chaser tossed his head and threw the bosal off. What a surprise that was. He dismounted and put it back on and it happened again. He could have won the class according to the judge, but she had to disqualify him for that. Before Amy showed, she spray painted a piece of baling twine black and tied it to the bridle. That worked, but you could see that Chaser tried to throw it off again. Silly horse, who says they are not smart.. lol

Amy is looking, but is not in a big hurry. My friend who has the really nice Appaloosas, has a 2 yo that she wants Amy to ride and take to shows. We will see how that works out.

Hello everyone!

It has been a very horsey weekend. I have a horse show in two weeks, so I've been preparing for that. Rode Levi yesterday, and boy was he full of himself! He was hauling on me and charging around the ring like a bull. I was practicing my test, and instead of trotting off from X, we were doing canter departs. (Beautifully I might add, but not what I wanted!) He just wanted to go go go! Took a trail ride today, and Oliver took a digger with me on him. I don't know if he fell asleep or what, but one minute we were walking along a level surface, and the next minute he was on his knees. I scrambled to stay upright, and we kind of sat there for a couple of seconds until he got back to his feet.

I don't know if I've mentioned, but my trainer is moving 20 miles south of here, so I've also been going back and forth this weekend scoping things out and planning to help her out. I think that this is what my two weeks of vacation is going to turn out to be. The property needs a lot of work to make it horse safe.

Well it has not been a horsey weekend here. Yesterday we decided against riding, and it turned out to be smart, because the rain started before we would have gotten back.

We worked on some projects yesterday, went to the dump.

Today we were at the beach house, Dad’s birthday is tomorrow, took him out to breakfast.

I was beginning to wonder where you were today:)

Tomorrow I’m going to the fair with a friend, so nothing horsey then, other then watching others ride:)

Good think you missed the rain. I hate riding in the rain.

You should come to Cincinnati and come to the Tall Stacks Festival when about twenty-five paddleboats are all docked at the riverfront. You can tour them, or take a supper cruise. It is a huge gala that happens in the fall.

You all have been great helping me with my novel, which is now on its third draft. The horses play a very strong support role in this story. Due to your help, I have been really able to add lots of color and depth. They just don't stand around, but have their personalities, etc.

If you have a moment... could you all comment on this one paragraph. In it, a horse is injured. The only time I've seen a horse injured is when something happens during a big race. (BTW, I hate to see it... even though I know nothing of horses, I think they are magnificent creatures) This is the chapter that introduces the sixteen high thoroughbred stallion that you all helped me to craft. In the opening, the favorite mount of Jeb Stuart (Virginia - mare, hunter) is injured. Is there anything I could add that would bring this scene to life. Anything I wrote that just isn't plausible.

Thank you so much.

Here is the paragraph: It was dark when Stuart led Virginia to the corral at the rear of Camp On the Way Back. She was limping badly after stumbling into some type of rodent hole. She went down hard, tossing Stuart over her head and onto the sun baked ground. Once he stopped seeing stars, he scrambled to his feet and grabbed her reins before she did more harm to herself. He ran a gentle hand down her shivering matchstick thin leg. His careful examination revealed no broken bones, but she was clearly in agony. Slowly, he walked her back to headquarters. Resting her when she needed it. Cajoling, praising, begging her to keep walking. Then, the horrible moment when she balked and refused to take one more step. He emptied his pockets of sugar lumps and bribed her to continue.

Thank you once again for your kindness and your help.

In the scenario you are portraying,”She went down hard, tossing Stuart over her head and onto the sun baked ground,” it brought the picture to my mind of the horse going down on her knees. With the ground as you describe, it could easily have skinned up the horses knees pretty good, and then started to cause swelling...

I want to run something I was thinking yesterday by you two.

First I want to stress it does not matter to me one way other the other, but since there is an option now, I wanted you two to make the choice.

Your two horses are going to be the only ones that I will be putting in panels, since Beaker isn’t going to make it. So I wanted to let you all choose, do you want to put them in the arena together where they will have a lot more room to move around in, and where there will be a tiny amount of grass for them to pick at...or do you want to have separate smaller pens. The smaller pens would be approx. 16X16.

It was just a thought I had, since these two horses have run together in the past, right? that maybe they would be alright together and you would prefer letting them have more room.

And there is also the option of putting them together and watching them and if it looks like there could be a problem we could go ahead and separate them. I don’t think it’s going to take much more then 10-15 minutes to make the pens. I have it worked out in my head, that the panels that make the corners of the arena to pull them around to make smaller pens, there will really be no having to move any panels great distances, just pulling them around at the corners.

Sorry for the late response, but that’s great news about the job Beaker! I sure have been praying that it would come through for you. We’ll miss you at the get-together, but we’ll drink a beer in your honor one night to celebrate your good fortune.
