FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Oh dear, not another episode! Have you had a weather change or hay change? Is she getting enough water? It sounds like colic to me, keep us posted! Good to know that she’s pooping and farting. Out of curiosity, do they eat off the dirt?

I’ve fed off the ground in the past, but lately not... been feeding on the floor in the barn, which is mats, and most recently, from the hay racks we just moved.

Just got on - sounds like it’s been about 5-6 hours, how is she doing? I wouldn’t feed her anything to speak of for awhile and if she is still uncomfortable, more banamine until you can get a vet. Can you hear gut sounds? If she’s deficating that’s good.

She’s doing OK. I let her out into the yard last time and she was GOBBLING grass, not just browsing like she was, so she was hungry! I let her eat a little grass then put her back in her sick paddock and gave her just a little hay. She’s finished that now and she’s just standing around.

I think she’s better.

On the feed issue, I just never know what to do... vet’s wife said eating a little green grass was preferred (higher water content than hay), to get her gut functioning again, some on the horse forum say hay is OK, while some say don’t feed her anything. Gak.

Personal opinion only here - grass first because of the water content, then hay. Hay is a good roughage. Just no grain unless maybe a warm bran mash. On a bad colic, nothing to eat but it doesn’t sound like her’s was real severe - she wasn’t violently rolling was she?

She didn’t roll long when I saw her, no. Where she layed down was real soft and uphill so she’d have never gotten over. She just layed down, kicked a couple times, gave up and layed flat. She got up when I went to her.

Well, all still quiet here... I'm exhausted. I tend to look calm but internalize stress, and worryin' about this pony all day has me beat. I can't wait for my honey to get home so someone else can keep an eye on her and I can take a nap :~)

I think she's fine. I gave her some more hay after the first handful seemed to not cause any problems. That muscle in her abdomen seems to have relaxed.

I realized that I hadn't eaten a thing all day myself and my own stomach was starting to really hurt. So I'm microwaving myself a turkey pot pie.

Hope your honey gets home soon and he can baby you instead of you babying the horse. It’s really difficult to be the responsible party with NO one to lean on during times like that. I always second guess my judgement - is it really as bad as it seems - or - am I missing something critical, should I be more concerned.

I think that’s what wears me out... going back and forth on my own judgment ;~)

I don’t know if any of you remember that little boy scout that was lost a while back. It was a shiloh shepherd that found him. I have kidded my trainer/handler who owns bloodhounds forever for that one.

Was she having a little trouble having him? Poor babies. We used to raise Simmental cattle had had to pull a few. I think it was because they were so big.

REally, I thought you were still having fairly warm weather. There is no evidence of fall in the trees yet here. It will be interesting to see how “fall” it gets before you all get here.

Today is my first day at “work”:). Jenny is going on vacation, so I’m going to her shop so tanners can still use the beds. Not sure how I’m going to enjoy this, it may be a long week.
