FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Previous threads:

LOL...yeah that’s what I do get a branch and try knocking them down before my face gets to them...yuk. I’m afraid if one ever fell on me...well that would be it...I doubt I’d survive it.

This time of year we see a lot of stick bugs and praying mantis too...gawd I hate those...and I’ve looked back several times and found one riding on the butt of my horse. I guess they fall from trees.

I think you made the right decision giving her the banamine. Hopefully that’ll take care of her until it passes. I wouldn’t feed her any hay or anything for a while though, just in case she’s still kinda stopped up and just isn’t feeling it. Make sure she’s got plenty of water though. She may still need a dose of mineral oil if the symptoms come back after the banamine wears off. You got any idea how long that stuff usually lasts? I’ve never used the paste form of it before but it sure would be handy to have around. I’ve got a syringe of the injectable type in the ‘fridge but have never had to use it (thankfully.

It was pitiful when she layed out flat like that especially. That’s when I got her up and walked her some more to make sure she wasn’t gonna gasp and die on me!

They’ve been eating this hay for about a month. This latest stuff is third cutting and the last stuff was second, but it ~looks~ the same to me.

I suspect the back forty. I’ve had them out there to rest the pasture a bit, and there’s probably stuff back there they shouldn’t eat. Plus there’s leaves falling. I know they aren’t supposed to have maple leaves. They usually don’t eat them, but... ????

But then again, she dropped right by the water bucket again, like last time, like maybe sometimes she comes out after eating and drinks too much and it drops her like a rock.

???? Dunno.

I had to switch hands to film to be able to flex him both ways, that’s why the video is so jerky, and my finger gets in the way:). Then I was trying to see if it still filmed by itself if I took my finger off the button. It doesn’t:)

Don’t worry, BladeRider and I will probably be the ones out front catching all the spider webs. That’s one disadvantage of having a faster horse.

When the vet gave IV Banamine to Bay when he colicked, it wore off in about 4 hours and he had to come back.

The vet's wife said she probably shouldn't have more for 10 hours so if symptoms return we needed to find a vet to oil her. She hasn't called back yet to let me know if Dr. Mike is in town or not.

Did you notice the development on the Spiritual Circle???

The Admin. came in and moved all the latest threads to the non-horse related forum.

Check this one out, it could get interesting:

That’s an odd decision isn’t it? Huh.

I swear I think those spiders can drop a web between 2 riders! Most of the time Shirley’s in front when we ride, but I’ve had them get me anyways after he’d already ridden through them.

As to how they get the web across the trail the first time, I found that out on National Geographic one time. They get on the end of a branch and start releasing a strand of silk into the wind. They just keep spinning until it catches on something on the other side, then they climb across it, spinning another thread as they go and attach it to a different branch and just keep on doing that over and over. Baby spiders travel from point to point very similarly. They spin a long strand of silk into the wind, but they’re so tiny and light that it just carries them aloft like a balloon. You pick up all kinds of useless knowledge watching the Discovery Channel sometimes! ;o)

Oh, now I love playing with those! Mantises are the only bugs I know of that actually can turn their heads and look at you. And maybe it's just because of that, but they look like they can actually THINK. The only thing that really freaks me out is when you have a 5 or 6 incher on your hand and he suddenly makes a leap and lands on your face. I do find that a little disconcerting. And they seem to love doing it too. But they don't bite or sting so they can't hurt you.

It’s funny because on FR they created the Religion Forum because they didn’t want all those theological debates in with everything else.

IMHO, there’s too many forums there. I’d cut them at least in half. Why is “Behavior” and “Training” two different forums, for one...

Oh my god...something else I would not survive:), but then I'd never be holding one. Becky

I agree...it’s really a mess over there, trying to keep up with something. I think that is why there are soooooo many threads, that get so few replies. I’ve often wondered about the Behavior and Training threads too, That could definitely be one.

This is my cat, Tikki. She's a dilute calico of no particular ancestry, but the smartest, sassiest and opinionated cat I've ever known. She's a hoot

Yeah, she’s looking at you like she might look at a particularly repulsive paparazzo . . . “what, not YOU again! Put that thing away!”
