Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Spoiler Alert!!)
07/11/07 | Dianna

Please DO NOT read this thread if you have not seen the movie. Even if you have read this book, topics under discussion can affect what you will expect in the last book.

Several pet theories for the Deathy Hallows have, perhaps, been laid to rest by the release of this movie. A number of plot points I had thought were important to the end of the series were completely left out of Order of the Phoenix.

1. There is absolutely NO reference to the cleaning of Grimmauld Place. Thus, any speculation about the locket horcrux being hoarded by Kreacher must be false.

2. The prophecy was never heard in full. The portion of the prophecy which could have referred to Neville instead of Harry was omitted.

3. There was no mention of Percy's estrangement from his family. Percy was shown at Fudge's side at important points, but unless his face was remembered from previous movies, people not reading the book may not have caught that.

There were two plot changes which puzzled me. Cho was the one who gave Dumbledore's Army away, not the unimportant character of Marietta. Also, Sirius, before he falls through the veil calls Harry, "James". I assume these changes have a point, but I don't know what.

There was also no reference to Hermione and Ron being Prefects. There was no Quidditch at all, so Ron would not be on the team.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, hope to soon, but from what I have seen on the trailers only LUcius and Bellatrix show up for the fight. Is that the case? Because I would have loved for them to show the whole fight scene like the book, especially where the death eater gets his head stuck in the time turner and his head goes from being a baby’s head to a full grown head. That would have been funny to see.

So, in other words, you won’t “spoil” it for me? ;)

No, there are more Death Eaters there, but the fight really only takes place in three locations, the Room of Prophecy, the Room with the Veiled Arch and the Great Entry Hall for the final battle. They may have thought it would be way too disjointed for film to have it moving all over the place in the different rooms. Even with just those three, it moves pretty fast, and is VEY exciting!

Hey Everybody,

I have a radical new idea...what if Lily was the Potions wiz and helping Severus? I noticed that Slughorn has been raving about Lily’s talents but hasn’t said anything about Snape’s. (Re-reading HBP at the moment....)

Hmmmmm?

Okay, I finally saw it.

I need to see it again, because my brain got confused. As usual when watching the movie adaptation of a book I’ve memorized, my brain was trying to fill in the gaps and couldn’t keep up.

The movie would leap ahead, while my brain was still on page 243. Nice job of combining several events into one on a few occasions, but my head hurt a few times trying to reconcile what was going on with what my brain THOUGHT should be going on. I had the same problem with GOF.

Lesson learned: Don’t read HBP again until after the movie, and don’t think so hard.

It had some funny moments, but there were a few times it dragged a bit. Too much time laying the ground work for the final scenes, and someone who hasn’t read the book would probably have no idea what was going on in a few places.

I did enjoy it, though. I just need to adjust my brain when I watch it. :-)

I just reread the section in OoTP where Harry visits Snapes memory. Alot of people suggest that he hates Harry because his eyes remind him of Lily. And that during the scene where James hexes Snape - he gets embarrassed because Lily sticks up for him and out of anger calls her a Mudblood. After reading that scene again, I think the only reason Snape dislikes Harry so much is that he is a spitting image of his father and a constant reminder of the embarrassment James and Sirius caused him during school.

Harry sees his father taking his O.W.L.S and Rowling makes it clear again how closely Harry resembles his father. And the next scene of James and Sirius hexing Snape is downright mean - Snape is minding his own business when they begin hexing him and Harry is pulled out of the pensieve before he finds out if James takes Snapes underwear off.

I think there is going to be a major surprise next week regarding Snape (he is a good guy) and Lily in book 7, but not necessarily that they were in love, but maybe?

I just finished re-reading HBP. Lily was loved by everybody and even better at potions than Snape. (Per Slughorn) Voldemort was not even going to kill her if she would just step away from Harry. (Yep..believe it or not...its there) but he zapped James without a second thought.

It seems the only time Snape really goes crazy is when its suggested in any way that he’s a coward. (How significant is this?)

Dubbledore was just about to reveal something to Harry about Snape when they were leaving to go after the fake horcrux. Something extremely significant happened to convince Dumbledore Snape was sorry and on their side, I just can’t even guess what. (Being in love with Lily just doesn’t seem significant enough.)

Only a week to go.....

;D

I saw it as Sirius was so distracted, and called Harry “James” without remembering exactly who he was with at the time.

It was the exact phrase he used earlier in the movie when James disarmed and inverted Snape. I think that was supposed to jar Harry a bit.

Okay, here’s the big question: in terms of sheer movie goodness, how does this one rank against the previous?

Darling Daughter (Who was a fan before darn near anyone else had heard of the the Sorcerer's Stone) liked it best of all the movies, although she allows that this might be because it's been a while since she read the book...

After Chris Columbus cast his daughter and niece in the first two movies, she's forbidden non-British actors.

Sooooooo, she didn't like Columbus discovering the New World?...

One of the few times we see Kreature he's putting something in a box and lugging it away.

The box looks like an old open fruit crate. He is clearly messing around with something just out of the field of view then you hear a tinkling as it looks like he puts it in the box. he walks right under Harry's nose and inverts the now clearly empty box to stand on it to polish his mistress' portrait's plaque.

but looking back at OOTP, Bellatrix's killing curse on Sirius was accompanied by a RED jet of light.

In the book.

In the movie it was an Avada Kedavra curse, with green light, then a fade into the veil.

He didn't FALL through the veil, he was raise UP into the veiled space.

Make of that what you will...

Did you notice that when the DA class went into the Hogs Head bar (where Dumbledore’s brother Aberforth is the bartender), he kind of shooed away a goat? Aberforth was in the paper, according to Dumbledore, for ‘practicing inappropriate charms in a goat.” It was a good extra little touch.

He was also wearing that sheepshagger's timesaver, A kilt...
