The Sox and Yankees are resuming their long standing rivalry with and a mix of old and new faces. The Sox have upgraded their team with additions of JD Drew, Julio Lugo and Dice-K. The Yankees return with changes to the starting rotation and the subtraction of Gary Sheffield. Both teams figure to compete deep into the season.
For two states without much to brag about with respect to their elected officials,
Chucky and Hidabeast vs the Flip Flopping Gigalo and the Swimmer
or
The Spitter vs Coupe Deval
Here's to another season of Yankees vs Red Sox on FR!
Yeah, history is great when you get to cherry pick the games that make your team look good and totally ignore the games in which you sucked. Of course never mind that the Yankees had to play the first two months with only three starting pitchers in their rotation, or that they were burden with injuries. Never mind that by the time Roger joined the rotation they were 10+ games under .500.
Yes, I will admit that we sucked in Detroit last week. We should have taken two out of three in Anaheim, and we probably would have if Hughes hadn’t walked the number nine hitter to lead off the seventh, but oh well we lost plain and simple. But who has the best record in baseball since the all star break? Of course during July when the Yankees were closing the gap it was “Oh the Yankees are just beating up on the weaker teams, while the Sox had to “ But when the Red Sox sweep the White Sox, while the Yankees have a bad series it’s because the Red Sox are great and the Yankees suck? Red Sox fans are always good for a laugh.
And lucky to make the playoffs? Of course if the Red Sox were the ones who had battled their way back into playoff contention after being 14 and a half games out, you Sox fans would be going on and on about what it being one of the greatest turn arounds of all time.
Anyways, this debate is pointless since no matter what I say you’ll continue to look at things through your own red sox tinted glasses. Just don’t think you can talk smack all season about how the Yankees suck and then not have it bite you in the ass when you lose to us.
The Yankees played like crap for the first two months of the year and June was nothing to write home about either. If they hadn’t stunk so badly then they run away with it. Who’s fault was it that they had bad starting pitching? Why no bench or pen? In spite of all that they threw out a line up with 7 all stars and proceeded to play like horse-bleep. If A-Rod doesn’t step up like Super Man then they are at least a dozen back right now.
With respect to your points about playing good/bad teams, the Yankees beat up on teams with bad records. When they had to go on the road they go 3-8. At home Tuesday they won on a 315 foot home run, last night they won by one run. Tight games but I wouldn’t go chirping like they completely ouplayed the Sox either.
If they come back and win then I will certainly acknowledge that they stepped up and did the job. The Yanks should also consider themselves lucky that Theo Epstein and the front office made bad moves in signing JD Drew and Julio Lugo in the offseason while not upgrading their bench like the Yankees did at the deadline. Cashman has also done a better job in drafting players than Epstein has.
Homerun Robinson Cano in the bottom of the 3rd!! Wang pitches 3 innings without a hit. Yankees ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd.
GO YANKEES!! RED SOX SUCK!!
HOW SWEEP IT IS!! Time to get out the broom and sweep the dirty stinky sox under the rug.
I’m sure Damon, Jeter, Abreu, Matsui, Giambi, Posado, and Cano will like hearing your theory about how if A-Rod doesn’t step up and be “Super Man” then the Yankees have no chance and would be 12 games back. All I’ve been hearing all season long is how great the Red Sox pitching is and how the Yankees pitching stinks. Well this Red Sox hitting more or less was held in check by the “over the hill” Roger Clemens, Andy Pettite, and Chien Ming Wang. Big Sucky, I mean Papi had that one home run, but was a non factor otherwise. And as for this dominating Sox pitching? Meh. Dice-K and Schilling were less than impressive and Beckett absolutley got spanked last night. So I don’t buy this crap about how dominating the Red Sox pitching is.
Oh yeah, the Sox will probably still win the division. But trust me, we’ll see you in the playoffs.
GO YANKEES!!! SCREW THE SOX!!
Injury List
Chien-Ming Wang
Carl Pavano
Mike Mussina
Jeff Karstens
Phil Hughes
... Before the team headed north from their spring training home in Tampa, Chien-Ming Wang, arguably their ace, went down with a hamstring injury. Carl Pavano, who has been on the sidelines with injury virtually from the moment he signed a $39.95m four-year deal, predictably followed Wang to the disabled list. That same day, Mike Mussina joined them on the DL, also with a hamstring injury. Kei Igawa was brought in from Japan to join the starting rotation, but he was demoted to bullpen duty after a couple of poor starts. His replacement, Jeff Karstens, who returned from injury on April 21, suffered a fractured right fibula after being hit by a line drive a little over a week later. Looking to give the team a jolt they brought up the prized, can't miss prospect Phil Hughes from their AAA affiliate. On just his second start the kid was in the seventh inning of a no-hit bid when the injury bug took another bite out of the Pinstripes. Another hamstring victim, Hughes would be out for four to six weeks...
Full story here.
Great Game today!
They started the year with Pavano and Igawa in the rotation. Igawa was at best their 5th starter and Pavano simply didn’t have the heart or maturity to pitch. How far did they think that they were going to go with those two? The injury thing was a function of conditioning which is why they erased their strength coach. That said they are getting healthy at a time the Sox are breaking down. Manny has an obligue pull which is a lot worse then they are letting on and Ortiz has a bad shoulder and a knee that needed offseason surgery that never happened. Based on those injuries I would not be surprised if the Sox fade.
If that does happen I expect that Yankee fans will forget that they have been using the injury excuse all year and start yelling “Choke”!!!
The match ups for each game could go either way, so you could have anything from a Yank-off sweep to a Red Sox sweep. Either way, the Skanks are in deep trouble in the East and Wild Card races.
After these three games who do you have to pitch the next two before you get back to this trio??? The Red Sox have Wakefield and Lester, or Tavarez or Buchholz and the Yank-offs have..umm..Mussina and Hughes, or Clippard, or Igawa, or Karstens. Ugly."
I feel like a prophet!
with 25 games left to go the Sox are ahead by 6. Sox go 13-12, the Yankees have to go 20-5. Sox manage to go 14-11 the Yanks have to go 21-4 to win the division. Big question will be if the Sox can create enough offense to win without Manny in the middle of the line up.
On the other hand, the Mariners have imploded losing 6 in a row and are heading into the Bronx tomorrow for a 3 game set. Detroit is fading so it looks like Sox and Indians in one series and Angels and Yankees in the other. Both the Sox and Yanks could be taken out in the first round.
Just to post on this thread...Red Sox up by 7 over the Yankees
The magic number lowers to 18. :-)
The old whore Clemens is going for an MRI on his elbow. Expect Mussina back in the rotation for TOWs next start. If the Yankees win 90 games it will be a huge feat. They had better come up with something more inspired the next few games or they are likely done. Seattle has a tougher schedule but the Yankees still have:
7 against Toronto (no push over)
6 against Baltimore (4-8 against the O’s)
3 against the Sox (at Fenway)
3 against Tampa (8-7)
Their 3-5 starters are two rookies and two old guys at the end of their careers.
Steinbrenner's head should be starting to explode about now. Heehee...
Clemens an old whore? Do you really have to resort to such personal insults? You’re a Red Sox fan, and you don’t like Roger Clemens. That’s understandable. After all, Clemens has spent the last decade making the Red Sox organization and their fans look stupid.
Admit it, the Sox and their fans thought he was old and used up back in 1996, and they pushed him out the door. So what does he do? He goes out and wins 4 Cy Young awards and two world series championships, after leaving the Red Sox. Had he done the same thing, but was still with the Red Sox, you’d be going on and on about how he is the greatest pitcher to ever play the game. So obviously you’re a little bitter. But an old whore? Comeon, dude. Seriously.
When the contract was up and it was time to negotiate a new one Roger talked about wanting to go home and be closer to his family. Well, next thing we all know Roger moves 500 miles NORTH of Boston because Toronto was willing to pay his ass more money. So much for being closer to home, Rog.
Roger leaving had nothing to do with the fans. They booed him for going to the Yankees. I recall the Yankees giving Boomer Wells a lot of love when he signed in Boston. (Spare me the story of how he screwed the team in 2003 story....see below)
Oh, gotta love how he “retired” in 2003, got his send off from NY fans (plus the Hummer) then turned around and started pitching for Houston. Way to go Rog. He screwed you Yankee fans out of a World Series. Kevin Brown was his replacement. In spite of that, when you nothing for pitching you all welcomed him back with open arms.
Roger could have pitched at home in Houston (like he said he wanted to do back in 1997 and then after he suddenly unretired), he could have pitched for the team in 1st place (The Sox) or he could go to the team willing to pay him the most money, the Yankees. His allegiance to Joe Torre is a lie because Roger does what’s good for Roger.
During the time Roger played the game he was one of the dominant pitchers of his time and will go into the HOF as one of the best ever. But, don’t ignore his history and his comments just because you needed another pitcher this year.
By the way, the Old Whore is going to miss his next start, has pitched.500 ball and will likely fall apart before the season is over.
Now we need to Yanks to fade, for Detroit to get the Wild Card, since I’m pretty much conceding the Division Title to Cleveland.
Detroit is done...
Yankees-Angels in one Series, Sox-Tribe in the other.
They certainly will be done if they can’t start winning at home.
They have injuries to key people, they have a lot of bad at bats and their D is very soft.
I think the Angels are the best overall team. The Yankees hit more home runs but the Angels are faster, they create more offense and have better starting pitching.
