June 1957 – Residents of Tulsa, Oklahoma are enjoying their city’s anniversary, called “Tulsarama!” Most every city around the country enjoys parties; it’s a big tradition throughout the United States.

Tulsa representatives decided they needed something unique and different in order to compete with Oklahoma City. They decided to entomb an automobile in a time capsule, using a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere as the car of choice.

I was a juror this morning and took a look at progress during a break.

Half of the concrete cover was off, and workers were pumping out water. Apparently, the car had been almost submerged in H2O.

I could see the rear half of the car, but it's covered in plastic wrap. Should be interesting what's underneath...

I am just all swept up in the excitement of this buried car business!

Good for you, by the way those are a couple of good looking chicks, don't know about the boys holding them though!

Ok...here's some pictures! Not great pics...my battery was running down and it was a dreary rainy day.

We went down into town and saw where they had the area sectioned off. Burt Mummolo with Channel 8 was there...

The boys stood up on some rocks to see if they could see in...but you really couldn't.

There was a few people milling around...reporters and such...taking pictures over the fence.

I thought that was a good idea so I took some too...this is all you could see.

Oh, please. I’m tired of reading about these time capsules containing the 50 year old wonderments. In my opinion a time capsule should not be opened for a minimum of 100 or 200 years. Perhaps I’m irked by “time capsules” that are younger than I am!

If what I’m reading about all the water they are pumping out is correct.....

That car will be one huge rusty pile of scrap.

Hope not, though.

I know what you mean. I think there is one over in Japan that is not supposed to be opened for a thousand years. Now that would be something to see.

I know it. It really doesn’t look good.

:-(

Well, we’ll know exactly how it is on Friday and I’ll post pictures of the Tulsarama event too...

The '57 Chev came with a nice 289 cube V-8. Put the power pack option on and it was a hot car. Could even get fuel injection, but it was mechanical and didn't always perform that well.

The '57 may have had a 265 V8 the 289 was a Ford, Chevy made a 283.

If memory is correct. The '58 283 was a bit different then later models, namely it had side motor mounts and a rope real seal.
