The Hobbit Hole XXXIII - And the brook that leaps from hill to plain...

Posted on 03/08/2007 2:40:27 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

How was your ride?

Heh...I knew you’d gone when I pulled into my driveway and pony was pacing and hollering...

Poor Pony Pony needs a pony of her own.

Thegirl seems right at home on the horse.

she really loved it... thehorse (4 y/o mare) she rode was vey well trained, and vey sensitive tuh directions... thegirl had a little trouble at first, sendin' mixed messages tuh the poor horse, but she caught on quick...

Yahsureyoubetcha. Especially good for boardings and small spaces and narrow corridors.

Though... yahknow... I didn’t get the opportunity to actually fire one on a boarding. I could only imagine what the sound would be like firing any firearm ~inside~ a small steel box like the spaces on most of the vessels we boarded.

The after-action debrief would be something like:

“Petty Officer Ramius... you said that you descended the ladder and that’s when a man pointed a weapon and you fired...”

“WHAT...??”

“How many rounds did you expend?”

“WHAT...??”

“When you saw the second person, what was he doing?”

“WHAT...?? Is that phone for me...? Tell ‘em I’ll call ‘em back...”

You know he will. :-)

He doesn't even have any of the ~good~ excuses, like "I'm sorry, hon, but we live in the city".

heh... heard somethin’ very similar tuh that before...

my recommendation for anyone what’s thinkin’ ‘bout buyin’ a house gun, is tuh take it to an abandoned house or barn, at nite, and fire it in a closed space without hearin’ protection... just once... so they know what tuh expect from the overpressure disorientation... and bein’ temporarily deaf...

Well, they’re a hi-tech kinda removable insole for shoes and boots etc. Winmag posted about them some time back and I ordered a pair - Oregon Aero, Inc. of Scappoose, Oregon.

Roger that. I’ve done it a couple of times just at the indoor range. Take off my hearing protection and pop off a couple. Just to calibrate for what to expect.

It’s impressive. Something to be ready for.

That was part of our qualification... a late night shoot, with and without flashlights on the combat pistol (IPPC) course to simulate dark spaces. It changes everything, of course.

Though, back then we didn’t have all these neato lights... we had to clumsy our way along with a five-cell mag lite and the six or however ways to hold it while shooting. :-)

Say... that’s a ~lot~ nicer than the old beat-up surplus 870’s they gave us for boardings. :-)

But even beat up, it's still a Remington 870. Takes a lickin', and keeps on ticken'.

I do that, even in daylight, when I take first-timers out shooting. I have them fire a few rounds with ear protection, and then one shot without. It helps bring added respect to the weapon.

Actually, it should have been: "takes a lickin', and keeps on kickin'.
