Prayers to Backhoe for the Loss of Taffy

Saint Francis

Blessing  all creatures, great & small.

"We who choose to surround
ourselves with lives even more
temporary than our own,
live within a fragile circle,

easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality never fully understanding the necessary plan. "
from The Once Again Prince

We still have Jake, although his is 13 which is an advanced age for a Corgi.

Ah, another handsome devil. I certainly wish they'd devote some effort towards a longevity gene for dogs and cats. I swore after Taffy that I was going to get a green parrot, teach him to cuss like a sailor, and will him to one of my young nieces so I wouldn't have to grieve for another animal- and now, we have one puppy and another old dog. Never say "never."

When Jake is gone we'll probably get two Corgi puppies. The following photo was a Christmas card sent out by the breeder from whom we got Jake.

Good Lord, they’re cute- I’ve usually had medium to large dogs, but I can see the appeal— they are adorable.

I am obviously biased...but Corgis, especially as they age, have the sweetest personalities. They were bred to be short. They are herding dogs that stay below kicking hooves. They are faster than the wind which is surprising to many as they are a little short for their weight. They are very smart to boot. They often have eating disorders so their portions at dinner need to be controlled. They will stop eating only when all available food is consumed.

God bless you my FRiend. I don't think we get used to the loss, we just get accustomed to the pain.

Thankyou for the ping Eaker, I just finished reading thru this thread.

It brought tears and smiles to my face as I went through it.

My dog Chance is now in a happy place and I am forever grateful he shared his life with me.

They give you so much, and ask for so little in return-- when we took in Zoe' ( see #97 ) I had doubts about getting another dog so near the end of her life ( she's 14 -) but as soon as she saw Miss Emily, who looks and smells a lot like her deceased owner, she galloped over, butted her, and rolled on her back. And doesn't want to leave her side.

Meanwhile, the "little fella" we got after losing Taffy has turned in to this:

They give you so much...

Prayers for you my friend and neighbor.
I know it was a tough call, glad you had the strength to make it.
I know how it is to lose a dog, I just lost one to a car.

The one on top is the one I just lost. She was a refugee from a pecan orchard.

Exactly right- I was little startled to see a ping to it, but it was kind of nice.

I can't, and wouldn't, presume to advise you what to do- I swore when Taffy was failing that I'd never have another dog, losing them is so awful... and yet, when she was gone, the silence...

You would never expect one medium-sized, aging dog to make so much commotion in a big old house, but after a couple of days, neither one of us could stand the quietness around here, and after driving around in the strange hope of seeing her where she had been picked up years & years ago by Animal Control, we went out there again, and like Miss Emily says about Cole, "He called to me..."

And boy, did he fix that "quiet" problem- barking, barfing, stealing stuff, scaring the bird half to death...

And Chance was grateful every minute that he had you for a friend as well. He was loved and he knew he was loved. That is the best kind of mortal life there is.

My wishes of blessings and comfort to you, my FRiend.

Hi NYTexan, sorry to hear about Chance. It’s always a difficult time to get through the loss of a beloved pet but like you said he’s in a happy place now and just remember all those great times you shared together :)
