However, based at least on their prominence in his novels, his obsession with unconventional sexual practices seems to have increased in later life.

Ellison as a writer, certainly deserves a salute. He's superb. As a person, however, he's a punk - unless he's changed in his old age.

I doubt it... He's a terrific speaker who will NOT suffer fools. He can be engaging and funny, or ascerbic and insulting, and he can switch between the two quite quickly. He can be great at cons. He's a terrific writer, but a better commentator (although I rarely agreed with him on politics), but I think that he's at his best as an editor. His "Dangerous Visions" collections introduced many readers to some really wonderful writers.

It's been years since I've seen him at a con, but I once called him at home on a Sunday morning, forgetting that CA was 3 hours earlier than NY time... OOPS! He was more than a bit grumpy with me. Not that I blamed him! lol I think it was about 6:0am there.

Decades ago he'd written the original 'Outer Limits" episode, "Demon With A Glass Hand" and later sued James Cameron's "The Terminator" for supposed Copyright Infringement and Plagerism for the use of time travel in saving the Earth as we know it.

Actually, it was for the short story "I Have No Mouth But Must Scream" (I believe that was the title.) The story behind the original Terminator really did pretty much borrow the entire concept from the story. And it wasn't about money. It was to get a line in the credits "acknowledging the works of HE"

It's an awesome story, and was really amazing when it was released.

Ellison's as cranky as ever, but a hoot to have dinner with (I had the pleasure of sitting next to him a few weeks ago, at a mutual friend's birthday). His wife Susan helps keep him somewhat in check, I suspect by kicking him under the table when he starts to get wound up about something. And while he's certainly made a lot of enemies over the years, he's won even more friends. He's famously generous and encouraging to young writers. But he does not suffer fools.

The Terminator lawsuit was over the two Outer Limits episodes, but the best part of the story is that, after he won, Ellison spent all the money to rent a billboard directly opposite the Paramount Studio gates saying "PARAMOUNT STEALS FROM WRITERS."
