We just picked up a beautiful black Lab puppy (9 weeks old as I write this) last weekend. He is devilishly handsome and too smart for his own good right now - hopefully the brain power will serve him well when he has the capacity to use it responsiby (the same descriptoin and hopes apply to my 2 human kids :)). He has a hunting dog's pedigree and is a purebreed, and I am reluctantly considering the neutering option for him when the time comes. Any suggestions from experienced dog owners would be greatly appreciated.
The Basset Hound was harder to raise than the Labs. While a Lab lives to please YOU, a Basset lives so you can please HIM, LOL!
As I type, the Lab is laying at my feet, adoring me...the Basset is snoozing on the couch. ;)

As I have been told about my bassets, they respond to you saying come by replying no.
I have got 3 of the hardest headed bassets ever. We rescued all three of them. My last rescue was a little girl last year (I just had to have the little girl with the long ears and droopy eyes).
Took us 8 months to house train her, and just like that, not a single accident.
As you can see from my post up thread, I've joined the ranks of the Black Lab Owners. My little girl has a little more length in the muzzle than your two guys -- that may be a girl thing, she's more fine boned all over.
But she's a treasure! Happiness is a Black Lab Puppy, indeed!
Dogs are situational - she doesn't connect "don't jump up on Alpha Dog at home" with "don't jump up on anybody else, anywhere."
Easy for me to say . . . Miss Ruby is a dedicated jumper. She's starting to get the message though.

Which one is doing the biting? How you would train depends on the answer.

Well this little lady was definitely show quality - she really stole my heart. This was about a year and a half ago, and I've just begun thinking of a Bostie again.
I thought my chocolate Lab had some serious contrast in snow, but my black Lab is so much . . . blacker. She's the blackest thing I've ever seen. Shoe polish black. Ten coats of hand-rubbed lacquer black. Middle of a moonless night in the back of a basement closet black.
I can't wait to see how she looks in the snow.
The VERY BEST suggestion I can offer is to find your dog a friend to play with -- a good-sized dog who's patient and friendly and playful.
Not only does it teach your dog good manners, but it makes him happy, and TIRES HIM OUT!
Ahhhh, black labs. They love drywall. As a snack.

As we have discovered! A (formerly) quarter sized hole in a wall in the basement is now softball sized.
Beautiful dogs.
Try her with a cow thigh.
Now dog will chew wood if a natural bone is available.
With my pair, I'm mostly the momma duck.
I bathe with 2 dogs on the side of the tub.
I sleep with 2 dogs on the side of the bed.
I do laundry with 2 dog's head's stuck in the dryer.
I cook with 1 dog between my feet and one right behind me.
So black the light bounces off her highlights in silver.
Beautiful aren't they.
