Van Halen, Grandmaster Flash, R.E.M., Ronettes and Patti Smith make Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

CLEVELAND — Van Halen made a "jump" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes and Patti Smith. A panel of 600 industry experts selected the five artists to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 12 in New York.

Van Halen was the 1980s hard rock quartet led by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, outrageous lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and later rocker Sammy Hagar, that put out hits such as "Jump" and "Dreams."

R.E.M. was the quintessential indie rock band until breaking through to mass success in the early 1990s with songs like "Losing My Religion."

Grandmaster Flash led the most innovative act in early hip-hop, and the song "The Message" was like a letter from urban America.

Punk rock poet Patti Smith and Phil Spector favorites the Ronettes round out the 2007 class.

To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.

I've alway been amazed that in a band like the Continental Drifters, with Vicki Peterson and Peter Holsapple, Susan Cowsill is the one who stands out. Her songs are wonderful. I've never gotten around to checking out her solo stuff, but probably should.

I remember one of my favorite all-time bands, The Smithereens (who should also be in the Hall, IMHO), reunited some of the Cowsills to do backing vocals on one of their songs.

I was there too! DLR was so drunk he sucked so bad. All the stuff I'd heard him say in a previous concert that sounded spontaneous he blurted out in the first two songs.

Not only did he sound terrible, but he forgot the words to one of the songs.

Age will do that to you.

Getting old is no fun, but it's better than the alternative. LOL!

Speaking of forgetting lyrics, I got ruined on Fleetwood Mac when I went to see them on their reunion tour. We had kind of a bird's eye view of the stage and we could see that Stevie Nicks was singing off a teleprompter.

She helped to write the songs. She'd been singing them for 30 years. 12000 people in the audience can remember the words, but she can't. I haven't listened to Fleetwood Mac since.

Thats when Diamond Dave is on. I saw them at Madison Square Garden in 82' and he was visibly drunk. They opened with "Light Up the Sky" and he blurts out "I forgot the f'ing words". Eddie made up for his buffoonery

That's a very common practice nowadays. I hate going to see a show and catch the singer glancing down at the prompter. Jeez, if you forget the words, just ad lib something or flub it outright - it adds to the fun. I saw Jerry Garcia do this probably 50 times and it was always funny.

Randy California of the group, Spirit, showed EVH how to tap notes on the guitar. EVH took it to a new level.

OMG, where did you find that? When I was eight I asked my parents for a Beatles album, and this is what they got me - because this was as close as they could come to remembering the name. I straightened them out pretty fast! :)

R & R HOF - IMHO, it cost too much and had too little.

And why is there a Brittany Spears outfit there?

I used to sing a two hour set at a local bar. It gets very hard sometimes to remember lyrics to songs. I call them brain farts. I have sung the last verse first, first last, or the same verse twice in a row. I even have sung verses from another song in the middle of a song. Very few folks noticed and if they did they just laughed or smiled. I never stopped to say I forgot the "f'ing lyrics!

The handbook on marketing 4 young lads as rock stars was that album cover, sleeve and vinyl. Simply the best.

David Roth and William Shatner, a couple of old mensches we never saw coming.
