They feel like champs even without the title (Boise State's Dream Finish)
LA Times ^ | 1/3/06 | Chris Dufresne, Times Staff Writer

Monday night's Fiesta Bowl was as good as it gets for underdogs like Boise State, an imperfect college football system and any sandlot kid who ever drew up a trick play.

Seldom has a major event in sports ended up this way …

Billy, you go deep, run around the fire hydrant, and I'll hit you between there and the ice cream truck.

Boise State's 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., was the kind of thriller with the kind of buzz that spilled into the next day.

It was a victory for big dreamers and have-nots.

Oklahoma has won seven national titles in football. Boise State was a junior college until 1968.

"It shows that the gap is decreasing fast," Boise State running back Ian Johnson said about the gulf between the top teams and those not considered among the elite.

The Fiesta Bowl was supposed to be a nice prelude to next Monday night's Bowl Championship Series title game between No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Florida in the same stadium.

Instead, the first Fiesta stole the spotlight, at least for a day, of the "big" game.

"I hate to say this, I fell asleep and my wife kept hitting me," Florida Coach Urban Meyer said after arriving in Arizona on Tuesday. "She said it was the greatest football game she ever saw."

Shelley Meyer was not alone.

I would also suggest that any team that doesn't have to play in a conference championship should be ineligible to win the national title. Ohio State won the Big Ten by winning out in the regular season, while some teams (like Florida) then had to go on and prove themselves one more time against a very difficult (especially in the SEC) opponent in a conference championship game.

True. I would have liked to have seen Ohio State play Wisconsin.

Thanks for posting the video link. I wasn't able to watch the game. There were so many rabbits pulled out of hats in the video it looked like a magicians convention. Amazing game.

The funny thing is a lot of people didnt even see it. Rose Bowl had 40% higher ratings. That is why ABC stuck with that game, and giving up the rest of the BCS package.

I think Fox's coverage has been better than ABC/ESPN's myself....I like the longer pregames, with the backstories, etc. And them showing the bands. It is better than the three bowls in a row that it used to be, with kickoffs being delayed for the previous game to finish.

That's the decision by the conference. And Notre Dame isn't even in a conference, so if they could actually live up to their hype it would be troublesome for them too.

The BCS isn't around to make things fair, it's to try to preserve the status quo of powerhouse teams.

The Rose Bowl was one of the worst games I have ever seen. I didn't even realize the Fiesta Bowl was on and missed it. Thanks to the poster who provided the youtube link.

When I was watching the game, it looked like his hand was OB, but they showed a different angle where it looks like th ball breaks the plane before the hand goes down. Besides, there's no way the OU defensive line would be able to stop BSU from punching it in from the 2 inch line (both teams O-lines outweighed the opposing D-lines and both teams D-lines were getting pushed around at the end of the game)(and there was time left for at least another play).

OH GAWD! After seeing USC's performance against Michigan in the Rose Bowl, I am eating my heart out that they blew their shot at the title game. That said, I am genuinely thrilled that Florida got the nod, if only to keep the SEC contingent from whining about how they are always left out and don't get any credit for their "tough" conference. If Ohio State loses, there will be 1 undefeated team and I think they deserve at least a share of the title. They may not have had as tough a schedule as Florida, but they've shown they can compete with the big boys and win.

Well, let's get real. If you have 2 teams that are undefeated, you have to go with the one with the tougher schedule. Boise State has really made a statement. But, come on, it was a close game against a team that wasn't exactly the toughest. Ohio State is still the standard-bearer at this point.

OK then it goes to reason if FLorida beats OSU that that means they are a better team than Boise St since OSU is a better team than Boise St -- so why should Boise get a tie then?

You're missing the point. If Florida beats OSU, then there is only 1 team left with an undefeated record. The strength of schedule should be brought in as factor, only if 2 teams remain undefeated. OSU is only considered a "better" team than Boise State if they remain undefeated.
