The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

If we can believe horses have personalities (and I think they do) then we can believe there are personality conflicts. I do think your end result is the same.

Bob never got along with Bay all that well (or any of the other Arabs he’s tried to have on his place) he’s just too loud and strong for them. But he could see Bay’s obvious affection for me. He took it as Bay having a preference for women... but I think it’s the handling more than the gender. Bob does fine with the Appys he’s had, who are not as easily cowed as Bay is.

Good morning everyone.

I've been seriously absent lately. I can't get online at work very much anymore (I used to check in before work started, at lunch and breaks) because we have been put on the city's server which blocks things, doesn't allow pictures and/or cuts us off. Today is my first day of vacation - two whole weeks :) so if my server stays up for my home computer, I'm good to go for awhile.

An American Mother - I love the pictures of Shelley and Ruby, I'll try to get some new pictures of Blue and Belle here shortly. We are thinking about sending Blue out to a trainer for some serious work.

cjshapi - I am so sorry about Whitey, I've been there and while you know it's the right decision it sure is hard to lose a good friend, it still hurts years later.

PayNoAttentionManBehindCurtain, Carton253 - My old mare and my son's arab gelding would make life miserable for someone they didn't like. That generally meant someone who wanted to cowboy and prove how great a horseman they were, although Freckles, the gelding would take serious advantage of a timid rider. Bone jarring trots were the biggest. Lady had an extended trot that I could sit for hours but if pissed off, she could make you feel each stride clear up to your teeth.

HairOfTheDog, ecurbh - my feral cats solved my mole problem but my neighbor has tried just about everything to no avail. You might try dumping mothballs down the holes and then coering them up to see if that helps any. I'd sure worry about a giant sinkhole whereever that water is going.

Endeavor, praying your house sells rapidly and you get moved and settled.

Miss Targets - Bodie will mellow out, try talking to him and explaining that he's making you nervous and trying your patience, it really works :)

CindyDawg - still planning on retirement this year although I don't know how God's going to give me the financial ability to do it :) - somehow I expect. Lots of changes at the library in the past six months and it's no longer fun to work there, it's a trial daily and the doctor tells me I'm now working on an ulcer so time to get out and relax.

I'm sorry it's been so long since I've posted, I do try to keep up everyday but I'm not sure I haven't missed some posts.

Well, glad you checked in... glad it is nothing more than work obstacles keeping you away.

The cats do pretty well on the mole hills in the yard. They’ve gotten some. They don’t go in the paddock though, they never have. The horses scare ‘em.

The cats in the yard might be why you now have such a problem in the pastures, the moles are moving away from the yard. I don’t know of anything that is a sure fire cure.

OK Pippin found himself confronting a loose puppy this morning...

And ended up taking a rather unheroic position under the truck.

Dang, you have a lot going on.

I hate it when a workplace changes that much. Had a law firm dissolve out from under me in 1992, that was not much fun. But here we all are!

Be sure to post the Blue and Belle pics whenever you can. Ruby is so long in the body, she looks like a train of cars or a giant wiener-dog. She's flopped out on the floor at my feet right now (finally learning how to relax!) and she just goes on and on and on . . . . Shelley looks like a box beside her.

Pippin has gotten to be a big (and prudent) cat!

Yes, and as the puppy found out, he’s quite >pointy< in parts!

Enjoyed the pictures of your pups :~)

This little terrier is not a bad little retriever... she’s already better at actually bringing the Kong back than Homer... even though it’s way to big for him to carry.

Sometimes you just have to do things on faith that things will work out:’)

LOL. What a surprise that must have been. Who was more shocked? The cat or the loose dog?

Loose puppy is not sure what to make of the cats... He thinks they look pretty interesting, but they don’t seem to be very good sport.

I'm sure there is not an answer, but since the horses play so prominently in my novel, I read all of the answers and try to incorporate what I have learned.

If you haven't already, I would purchase a couple of good books on horses and riding, and a couple of books on cavalry horses. Perhaps Inge_Cav can help with the latter?

It doesn't really change the outcome but I just don't credit horses with having personality conflicts.

I understand what you're saying. :-) My trainer is big on the "matching horse and rider personalities." She didn't think that Levi and I would have gotten along at all, but we get along just fine, and it's all in the way that I handle him. He's so nervous about things that I make sure that whenever I'm handling him I'm dead calm about everything. (On the outside at least) I never react when he spooks, and I'm always very slow and careful and methodical, and always always relaxed. He seems to take a lot of confidence from that. When he does want to spook at something under saddle, I just make him work work work, to distract him.

On the other hand, this other mare pinned her ears the first time I walked up to her stall. Maybe I look like (or smell like) somebody who Done Her Wrong.

That happened to me with a mare once. She would have liked to do me serious harm as soon as she looked at me, and I never laid a hand on her or treated her poorly. She just Didn't Like Me At All. She would corner me in a paddock and then turn her butt to me and kick, and once she ran me through the fence.

I can recommend an excellent book that will give you the lowdown on the European school of cavalry training, specifically the Portuguese school at Mafra.

Effective Horsemanship by Noel Jackson. Best all-round book on the nuts and bolts of training that I know of.

Anything that the Pony Club puts out is also worth reading, and the Brits put out a general cavalry manual for almost 150 years.

In that first pic, Pippen is saying "Why I eyes ya!" ...And if you don't get it, here's the clip of an angry talking cat that looks like him. :-)

I had to bounce a bucket off the nose of one of my trainer's horses once.

But he was that way to everybody. It was nothing personal. He was just a Bad, Mean Horse.

She eventually sold him to somebody who was going to compete him professionally in three-day. He was just too dangerous to keep, with all the little kids around the barn.

Here's a funny pic:

Ruby was swimming valiantly towards her mark, when the dog on the left got loose from his handler and got there first!

Our club president (who was the Bird Boy) thought fast and tossed another bumper out in front of Ruby's nose. She grabbed it, and everybody was happy.

She certainly is a Splashy Pup.

Some people say that there’s no such thing as a mean horse... that for a horse to be mean, someone has to make him that way. While I agree with that mostly, I also have to say that sometimes, sometimes a horse is just mean by his own nature alone.

This was a horse that my trainer had bred and raised herself.

She has a lot of experience breeding, she had at that time a splendid Thoroughbred stallion who had been a great show jumper in his day, with a lovely sweet temperament (she could keep him in a barn full of mares, no problem, he never got pushy or possessive, and anybody could ride him.) She bred him to one of her warmblood mares. The colt was always handled gently from birth and never forced or trained roughly.

He was just a mean S.O.B. and was so from about the time he turned 2. Maybe he was psycho.
