I'm sure there is not an answer, but since the horses play so prominently in my novel, I read all of the answers and try to incorporate what I have learned.

If you haven't already, I would purchase a couple of good books on horses and riding, and a couple of books on cavalry horses. Perhaps Inge_Cav can help with the latter?

Hi, Not much help myself. vetvetdoug is the expert. There is also a saddle making business called “Border States Leather Works.” At one time they were online and had lots of information on saddles and cavalry horsemanship.
