The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I have ceramic tile and don’t miss the carpet. Two problems though...it’s slipper when wet and the kitchen always needs mopping. Hopefully this next year I will get around to a brick color in there.

Do you ever watch that show “Little People” He and his son were hunting them, with guns and water hoses. They finally got some traps.

I haven’t seen that.

Apparently dad has two traps... we’ve read up on how to set them, we’ll try that, next time we can get up to the beach house and pick them up.

You think that sounds corny or would they enjoy it? I think they’d like the woods, they’re from pine forest area of AZ, so it’s much different from their woods at home.

You'd have to ask them. I don't know how partial they would be to being lead, but you and Ecurbh could each walk by the horses heads. I do know that when I did the pony party last weekend, all of the adults wanted to go for a ride, lead or not. (And they were all sober too!) :~D

Becky, that's terrible about your friend's horse, but I'm very glad that he seems to be pulling through

Frog, you can get fresian colts pretty cheap, (Cheap being under 10 grand, which IS cheap compared to the $30,000 price tag of a trained one) A fresian is my dream horse, but it'll just have to remain a dream! I'd like to have a Fjord someday, that's more attainable. There are quite a few Fresians at the shows that I go to, I'll have to get pictures.

A relative of mine had a huge mole problem and tried everything to no avail. The only thing that worked was small explosives. (I kid you not, but I don’t recommend it if you don’t know what you’re doing. Fortunately (I guess) he did.)

My mother's dog used to chase the cat for about a year, (He used to bark in her face to make her run, and then give chase) until she turned around and gave him a good swat on the nose. Now she torments him! He's terrified of her. My mother had to come home from work early one day because the landlord had called and said that the dog was barking his head off, which was unusual. Mom comes home to find the cat cornering the dog against the bed, and he was too chicken to go around her.

And another strange thing that the cat does... whenever someone yells at the dog, and shouts "BAD DOG!" she's come blazing from wherever she is in the house and attacks him, hissing and spitting.

I'm back with two more terms that I hope you can help me with. From Robert E. Lee, Jr's book about his father.

"My misgivings were fully realized, for Traveller would not walk a step. He took a short, high trot - a buck trot, as compared to a buck-jump - and kept it up to Fredricksburg, some thirty miles away."

What is a buck trot and what is a buck jump.

Thank you very much.

Good Morning. Going to be a beautiful day. Sunny and mid 70’s (sorry Becky) I am getting ready to head out to the horse show. See you all later and have a great weekend!

Neither do I, but according to Young Rob, Traveller was doing it on purpose because he didn’t want to be ridden by anyone else by General Lee. That’s not the first place I had read that either, and the other authors used the same phrasing.

A "buck trot" is a little unusual - but a buck-jump is more common. That's when a horse doesn't really buck, doesn't put his head down or really put his back into it, but sort of does a half-canter stride with a kick out at the end of it . . . some people call it "crow-hopping" because that's what it looks like. It's rather uncomfortable, but it won't unseat you like a real twisting buck will. I used to ride a QH who buck-jumped when he felt good, he wasn't trying to dump me, just expressing his feelings.

I imagine what young Rob is describing is a similar phenomenon in a trot -- probably Traveller was suspending his trot and giving an occasional kick out behind. The "Big Blond" - my trainer's new enormous QH - does that when he doesn't want to go forward. All that energy has to go somewhere I guess.

Young Rob said after 30 miles of it, he was plumb tuckered.
