The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We had a pretty nice, but short (maybe an hour)ride. It is a beautiful day. Deer flys were out in force. At least the woods have dried up some, but where the 4-wheelers have tore it up, there is water and mud.

Bodie did pretty good. He puts his head down and really looks where he steps. In the front or in the back he was good. He did run my leg into a tree when he tried to flip around. Too worried about where the others are. He has no patience at all. I lunged him before we left and when we got back, I tied him to the trailer for awhile. I didn't take any pictures, sorry.

Holey crap, those holes are awful. Your feed store should have some kind of poison for those suckers.

Oh - gosh... I didn’t realize he was still AT the vets.

What are you going to buy? :~)

Glad you had an OK ride on Bodie... sounds like he is insecure and needs some miles and experience. I hope he works out for you.

I had a feeling when I'd flooded the holes before I wasn't even flooding half of it. You won't believe what opened up today. There's a hollow old root or part of a long-gone tree out there and the water is just disappearing down it. I mean it's been on full bore for nearly an hour now and it sounds like a waterfall in there, like it's disappearing down into a vast space.

Under it too... The water just disappears.

I don't know if it's helping me or not. But I'm going to let it run all day... or till it backs up, or comes out somewhere in town and they complain, whichever comes first :~)

Heh... what if we just started pouring concrete down the hole?

Jeez Louise what a hole! You may have the beginnings of a sink hole there. Next thing you know, your whole place will fall into it. ;o) Seriously though, I’ve never seen mole holes that big. You sure there aren’t Prairie Dogs up there?

Have you got a septic system or are you on the sewer?

Septic system...

...but it’s on the back side of the house.... (wondering what she’s thinking)

We've been making the same joke... like the trees in the paddock will disappear down a big hole, like a WB cartoon.

He still has a drainage tube in his side, and he is being treated for ulcers.

I want to get some of the check straps for my combo bridle/halter, for different bits. I’d like to have about 4 more sets of them, and I need some buckets for my trailer, so I don’t have to move buckets back and forth when I go some place.

That’s really about it, but I’m sure I can find other stuff:)

Ah - It would be nice to have several of the straps so you can switch them out easy!

One of my neighbors had a problem with moles in her front yard. She asked at the feed store what to do, and they said you have moles when you have grub worms in the ground. So if you kill the worms the moles go away...the problem with that for you is it’s in your pasture. She had to spread Diazanon (sp), I don’t think you’d want that in your pasture.

Those do look like awful big moles tho...geez.

Very cute pictures of the dog and cat:). Has he acted like he missed home any?

...wondering if you were filling up your septic tank or field lines with hose water...

Yeah, it looks to me like I need to rotate him between the petska and the myler bits. He overflexes in the petska and under flexes in the myler.

LOL!! Aren't cats evil! I used to have a cat who would rub up and down the outside of the chainlink fence of the dog yard, right under the dogs noses. You could just hear her going "Naa..Naa..Na..NAAAA..NAAAAAAAA!"

So you spray Milky Spore instead. It's a fungus that infects the grub worms and kills them and nothing else. Plus it's active in the soil for about 20 years. It's kinda spendy, but it's supposed to work.

I saw some at Lowe’s the last time I was in there looking for something else in the Garden Center, but I think I found several places on the internet that sell it too and it may be cheaper that way. It’s sold as a powder that you mix with water and spray. Google it and see what you find. A lot of people use it to get rid of Japanese Beetle larvae.
