You made my day Dog - I was wondering if the streaming video was working as it was a 50.3 meg production.

Wow! Either Nully got a new perm or Sweets got a new top that curled not just his toes, but his hair as well.
Nice afro there, Nully. It suits you. :)

MARÍA PITA On 4 May 1589 an English fleet under the orders of Sir Francis Drake sailed into the bay of La Coruña to attack the city in reply to the Great Armada that one year before had tried to invade England.

The English found themselves face to face with a small town defended by medieval walls and a few soldiers. The difference in numbers between attackers and defenders was made up for by the heroism of the latter, whose stubborn resistance saved the city from falling into English hands.

According to the chronicles of the time, it was the providential part played by María Pita that saved the city, killing the standard bearer just when he was about to climb over the walls. She thus acquired fame and became a historical symbol of La Coruña.

Thank you Cardhu! I love history...might need some explanation why killing a standard bearer was significant.

It probably dishearted the others -- most history is bunk anyway -- it is usually made up for other purposes.

THE LIFE OF MARÍA PITA Mayor Fernández de la Cámara Pita, popularly known as María Pita, was born c. 1560 in La Coruña into a modest family.

She married Juan de Rois in 1581, the first of four husbands ¿ the butcher Gregorio de Rocamonde, ship captain Sancho de Arratia and Crown Court page Gil de Figueroa were the other three.

She had a total of four children. Apart from the part she played during the siege, her life was full of vicissitudes, including two trips to Madrid and numerous legal cases. She died in Cambre in 1643, and although in her last will and testament she requested burial in the convent of Santo Domingo in La Coruña, no documents survive to suggest her last wish was carried out and her final resting place has never been identified.
