[Detroit] Lions news is bad news

...With a record of 2-11, the silver-and-Honolulu blue are firmly entrenched at No. 32 on any power poll in this spiral arm of the galaxy. Entrenched, that is, until another loss drops them behind Ohio State, Florida and the Hamburg Sea Devils. Think it can't get worse? Hey, this is the Lions. NFL schedule makers saw fit to arrange the endgame Kitty Cats' so, so long season likewise: at the Green Bay Packers where the Lions haven't won since a guy named Brett Favre took over there (that's right, 1992); against the Chicago Bears in a game which figures to see Motor City backers immortalize the chant "Fire *&#!!%&ing Millen!"; and at the Dallas Cowboys , who on New Year's Eve will probably looking to bag the No. 2 seed in the NFC... Kevin Jones, who was knocked out of the loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, figures to be out for the remainder of the season... Pro Bowl nominee Shaun Rogers... was slapped by the commissioner after testing positive for steroids. The judgment had Rogers forcibly sitting out four games and giving up $250,000. Naturally, "Big Baby" was innocent, protesting that the positive test represented a product that the 354-pound Rogers used to help him control his weight. Or he has asthma. Or he thought they were Shawne Merriman's Pez. Or something... Team officials announced yesterday that WR Mike Williams - you remember him: the former first-round draft pick cum The Most Useless Player in the NFL Today - flunked a weigh-in. At 240 pounds, Williams only missed the target set by Rod Marinelli and Co. by 20. Though no punitive measures have been mentioned, any punishment would seem pointless other then some quality time on the bench... Fire &#!!%&ing Millen.

After toying with us, and appearing to be on the march for a wild card spot (and with help, they could have won the division if they’d had even one more win in the first half of the season), then choking right at the moment of truth, they’re now doing that really annoying thing they do, coming on late and giving us hope for next year.

There is no hope for next year.

Accept that, and you’ve got a shot at being pleasantly surprised.

Calvin Johnson is obviously quite near the end of his career. Given the need for room under the salary cap, the Lions may try to deal him out while he still has perhaps one more season in him. What team that may be a Superbowl contender next season needs a future hall of famer receiver and/or has room in their budget?

Dealing Suh to the Dolphins was a great move for the Lions and not such a good move for Miami. Remember years ago, the A.C. Carter NFL draft pick? Kiss it, Dolphins.

The Lions still need an O-line. Simply put, they don’t have it. They’ve always tried changing QBs in such situations, and that hasn’t worked. They need to put together a mixture of early round draft picks and experienced but aging veterans. Give Stafford the time, and rid the team of the ruse of maybe-he’ll-throw-to-Calvin (because no one is buying it anymore), and they’ll get a dozen or so more first downs and win some games.

Tampa Bay fired Lovey Smith, after just his second season, and he’d brought them as close to wild card contention than they’d been in eight years, with a rookie QB. Makes no sense.

Neither does this:

Griffey was on 437 of 440 votes in his first appearance on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot. His 99.3 percentage topped Tom Seaver’s 98.84 in 1992... After about 100 writers who no longer are active lost their votes under new rules, there were significant increases for a pair of stars accused of steroids use. Roger Clemens rose to 45 percent and Barry Bonds to 44 percent, both up from about 37 percent last year.

[snip] It was a similar outcome in 2015: Team president Tom Lewand and GM Mayhew were axed midseason, and Caldwell was spared just long enough to shepherd his team to the butcher. Except a funny thing happened: Newly promoted offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter got Stafford playing the best football of his life. As shown in the highlighted stat line above, the Lions’ final eight games of 2015 were a quarterbacking masterpiece. The Lions averaged 26.1 points per game, over a touchdown more than the 18.6 points they averaged in the first half of the season, and they went on a 6-2 run that started with the Lions going into Green Bay and winning for the first time since 1991. [/snip]

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2608142-lions-gm-bob-quinns-first-big-decision-retaining-jim-caldwell-is-right-call

(besides that, how can a coach named Jim Bob Cooter NOT be destined for great things in NFL coaching? Anything he does in Detroit that doesn’t involve burning down the stadium will probably result in improvement. And come to think of it...

Oh wow, SF dumped Tomsula after one season, now hired Chip Kelly who was poop-canned by the Eagles. The Niners are whiners, and need a type-A/asskicking coach, so, good fit.

Hue Jackson got hired by the Browns, and plans to have *no* offensive coordinator, I like that, a battlefield general. He needs to beat Manziel with a bag of oranges if he doesn’t shape up during the offseason. Or beat him now. Or both. He only took the job if they’d dump Manziel, but at least this way Manziel would be beaten before he left. There’s almost no interest in him, best chances are to Dallas or to the Rams (wherever they wind up).

As mentioned in msg 401 above, Megatron is talking retirement, the team needs room under the salary cap, best option for both would be to deal him to a team in contention so Calvin will have a shot at a Ring. If that is the route, let it be to an AFC team.

RG III’s probably going to find a new team, but he’s already played his best ball, sadly.

He knows best, and I'm grateful he didn't wait until after training camp started, unlike some superstars I could name. They needed room under the cap, I was kinda hoping he'd be a trade to a contending team, maybe get that ring before he retired, but clearly he wants to retire as a Lion. That's wonderful. Of course, he'll be as familiar a name as "Herman Who? Oh, Herman Moore? Moore?" in about five years.
