We discussed tile. I'm holding final judgement until we do the bartop in the basement but I've never liked tile for a kitchen counter. I dislike the grout... always seems kind of yucky to me for some reason. I want a nice smooth surface I can knead bread on.

The granite tiles are 24" x 24" and only require about a 1/16th" grout joint, so it's VERY small, so there are very few grout lines on a typical counter. You could have a full 2 ft. square area to do any bread dough or pie dough prep. The Tile Shop had a full array of accessory pieces like the front edge pieces for the counter, which was what had kept us from thinking about it before. They also have smaller pieces of the matching granite that could be used as decorative backsplash materials as well. Check them out, The Tile Shop . They're beautiful!

I'd read that DalTile has Quartz tile, so I'm going to check those out, as well, since the Quartz would not have to be sealed.
