Volunteering in some way is a good idea regardless. I think they do four hour a week shifts - so someone can, for example, work just one evening or weekend. Probably require a background check, things being what they are these days, but I guess that's par for the course. Officially, the job I did for Catholic Charities required a background check.
Honestly, though, regarding nursing...I think I'd LOVE the coursework for anything medical, but I just don't know that I have the personality for the actual work. Even for nursing, where you're following orders to an extent, you need a lot of self-assurance, I'd say. And you need to be good with people. I don't think I'd fit the bill.
But maybe you'd do better than you think. Or there's a niche you'd do well in - eldercare or pediatric nursing, say. Nursing is one career they can't get enough people for.
Try a four hour a week shift for a while and see! At the very least it'll be something else to do. You might meet a cute doctor, too...
