Here is my original post which I have an idea you never read. It was in response to another poster saying she wouldn't mind having the three defendants as sons:
There's something about Collin Finnerty that just doesn't sit right with me. David and Reade seem like stand-up guys. David's b/s about strippers and drinking (I was young, naive and sheltered) was a bit hard to stomach considering they had drunken parties there all the time. Reade seemed the most honest and sincere. He seemed like a guy who was good at lacrosse but wasn't into the hijinks of a lot of his buddies. Collin Finnerty appears to be the sleaziest of the three. Maybe it's because he was the least articulate of the three, but he just comes across as a real jerk to me. I just remember the so called anti gay incident. I know it had nothing to do with anything anti-gay, but from what I understand about tht story, Collin and his buddies were drunk and just started harassing some guy walking by. He wanted no part of any fight and tried to get away, but they made him admit he was gay before they let him go. He just seems like a first class boozing jerk albeit not a rapist.
As you can see, I gave my personal opinion about one of the three boys- noting he was not a rapist. Check the posts of the different threads. People give their opinion about people in the news everyday. They don't know them personally. They never met them. They just formed an opinion based on a news story or what they heard them say on TV. A guy gets involved in a road rage incident- well, he's a jerk. A woman get's in a shouting match with a store clerk- well, she's a bitch. And on and on ad infinitum. People on this board voice their opinion about the other stripper, Mike Nifong, Duke's president etc etc. I have an opinion about Collin Finnerty and you'd think I'd insulted Mother Theresa. One poster even suggested I should be ignored because I wasn't a regular poster on this particular board- that is pretty damn scary and is the same type of thing Mike Nifong stands for. Man, I have an opinion and you'd think I was a rapist. Do you truly believe every young man at that party was a fine upstanding fellow? Maybe you live in a bomb shelter, but there are jerks out there. I read about Finnerty and watched him on CBS last night- and I formed an opinion. Last I heard, that was what Free Republic is all about.

As a teen in the 70's, I learned valuable lessons about our CJS. I had a good friend who's father was a judge. He cheated on his wife and he cheated at Monopoly. Add to that, our next door neighbor was a cop who was arrested for shoplifting in a grocery store - in uniform. I come by my cynicism honestly.

Has anyone seen any more extensive and more objective assessment of the impact of the 60 Minutes piece on the Durham DA race?

Look, in the Duke case, it is a matter of taking bad advice from a trusted advisor (all the boys are considered adults). In the case of your children under the age of 18, you'd better believe the school administrators can force a statement.
I wouldn't say a word if this really kept our schools safer, but what it has done is criminalize behavior that could be dealt with through punishment and the nut cases are still walking in with AK-47's. It isn't working -- at any level and it has opened the door to these obvious bogus charges being lodged against innocent people who are simply trying to cooperate and wind up being public enemy No. 1.
I'm not only concerned about "rich white boys". If it's this bad for them, how much worse has it been for poor disadvantaged kids who don't even have parents to call. This is crazy, and my son's black friends say it goes on all the time. When I was a kid, if someone hurt my feelings or rejected me, I sucked it up and in time got over it. Now, you'll be arrested.
This case was exactly like our son's. Ms. Roberts admits she alluded to the "white" boy's genitals. Race was introduced by the true racist first -- same as in our case. My son never said the N-word, never responded with a racial epithet, was accused a saying he would "Shank (her) black ass," had to come home and ask what "shank" meant because he'd read it in her statement -- and he's labeled the "racist jerk". Go figure -- then forced to explain his words, words he never said -- can you see where it went?

Not yet. Rumor has it next Sunday's segment will be most devastating to Nifong.

I'd like another segment that is even more devastating to Brodhead. I guess my expectation is that a District Attorney(D)is going to play fast and loose with the facts but that my University President should put the interests of the students before that of a local prostitute. Turns out that (D) corrupts in every profession.

Better to learn young, than to reach my age and watch you only child delivered up. I truly believed good guys win, eventually, BOY! was I wrong. I hope all my prayers for these boys will bring home a winner for them -- I didn't know enough to save my own son.
To: maggief
We all saw the same thing, but who are ya' gonna' believe, Kim Roberts, or your own lyin' eyes?
To: maggief
Reade said he didn't like the "tone" of the party but I thought I heard "boring" too. I remember seeing pictures from a "smoker" where frat boys watched tv porn and smoked cigars. Looked like the same sorta thing. These guys would never touch these chicks and, I believe, the amusement comes from impressing one another with their witty comments.
