Combination trailer for Clint Eastwood's two new movies about Iwo Jima at the link. Doesn't show a whole lot about either movie, but it does look like your typical light hearted Clint Eastwood fare. :)
Let me guess. The female lead, with whom the audience is made to sympathesize, suffers a broken neck and is paralyzed after being decked by a female Japanese boxer.
I have been there several times, and to this day when you run your hands through the sand you still come up with metal fragments. Until you see it you can't imagine the number of bunkers, tunnels, defensive positions the Marines had to defeat. It is incredible.
Despite liking Million Dollar Baby a lot and thinking it was a very well made movie as well, it amazes me when I see that people own it. I could never have the desire to watch the movie enough to own it just because it is so sad.
I'm glad Eastwood got permission to film there (seem to remember that it was no easy task). Authenticity adds so much to a movie.
And the movie is criticized by "Right To Lifers" who think that Eastwood's character was immoral for granting the request of a friend....
give him a break....
There was a recent NCIS episode that featured a marine Medal Of Honor recipient who turned himself in for a murder committed during action on Iwo.
It was completely fictional and featured the appearance of a wittness.... a japaneese soldier who could testify to events. He lied of course but he captured the attention of the old Marine. Turns out the bogus testimony made the marine realize the circumstances and not be so hard on himself.
The Japaneese admitted he was not on Iwo.....but was on Guadacanal.
THe subject is very interesting and Clint will do a very good job.
Last month I visited a relative who traveled to Iwo Jima about 10 years ago. He passed on to me some back sand and a relay from General Kuribayashis communication center. With the restricted access, the bunkers and much of the stuff in it's still as we left it 60 years ago.
This looks amazing.
There are a lot of the bunkers that still have the guns in them. I wasn't much into going into the caves. They have scorpions and some nasty centipedes which give me the heebee geebees, but I know people who found cases of IV bottle, cases of hand grenades, weapons, bullets, etc. The Japanese let you go into the caves, but you aren't supposed to remove anything. If you find a body you are supposed to report it.
Is ther monkey gonna be in it and whack a Nip over the head with a tire tool?
Two movies? They do look like serious dramas. No "Heartbreak Ridge" here (Clint cracked me up in that one).
A shame what happened to Sondra Locke's acting career.
Love NCIS and that was a good episode!!!!
Restricted access?
Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought the whole island was restricted from tourists.
Who does the island belong to? I know I should know that answer....
I never thought of that. I have a friend who, almost literally, owns every movie ever released on DVD. He attends just about every movie that's release, even the lousy ones (I tease him that he has no discernment when it comes to movies, and will watch anything that moves). I was distressed the way MDB film ended, but there is no doubt that it was a very well directed and produced film. It was also the biggest *downer* since "Ol' Yeller."
I was one of those "Right To Lifers"
