Horse struggles to survive pit bulls

LANCASTER - Pirate's life still hasn't returned to normal, not even close, his owner lamented. Nearly two weeks have passed since Pirate, a 12-year-old gelding, fell prey to two neighboring pit bulls that escaped from their yard in the 3000 block of Avenue L-8 the night of July 23 and tore apart the horse's flesh, practically killing him, had it not been for the intervention of some bystanders.

"We're still struggling," Karen Picard, the horse's owner, said. Her horse refuses to eat and continues to lose weight.

"I'm sitting for hours next to his feeder, talking to him, petting him. He'll pick up one strand of hay," she said. Her veterinarian has tried every possible treatment known to animal medicine and nothing worked. Now he recommended an over-the-counter human antacid as a last resort.

Meanwhile, out in Llano, two horses belonging to Marta Yeomans are on the mend from a pit bull that attacked them that same day, in the Largo Vista area.

Picard said what bothered her most was hearing from neighbors that those two pit bulls had escaped from their yard numerous times, at least five that she determined from the neighborhood stories.

In one episode, they killed three neighboring cats and in another instance they went after a 10-pound Pomeranian. The owners of the cats and the Pomeranian allegedly complained to Animal Control, but still the pit bulls remained in the custody of their owners, Picard said.

No dog that kills another animal belonging to someone should be spared the same punishment.

Not all pit bulls are killers, some are real lap-dogs. That said, a shot gun might solve this particular problem. These dogs are obviously out of control, and pose a danger not only to local pets, but to humans.

True, but they look exactly the same. I don't want to wait till he eats my cats to find out a pit bull is a killer.

In just the past couple of months there have been four different times that lap dogs have tried to bite me. These are not bad dogs but they were runnng loose. I have never shot at anyone's dog or cat before but my patience is getting a little thin.

"That said, a shot gun might solve this particular problem."

What you said.

Pit bulls, should just be exterminated....they are just too unpredictable.

Same goes for people. It's so hard to tell which ones are ornery, and even the calmest looking ones can occasionally go off and, well, vote Democratic or something equally destructive and painful to all right minded personnel.

No, seriously, I think a civil suit standard of proof for finding the owner liable, and automatic treble damages PLUS destruction of offending animal would be enough.

This is exactly why we shoot any dog that comes on our property. When we get new neighbors we warn them, some listen, some learn the hard way, (our state law actually states that it is our responsibility to shoot strays). It isn't just pitbulls, all dogs that are allowed to roam are subject to the pack mentality. If you had ever seen a baby calf or a colt half-eaten alive you'd understand.

Goodness gracious.

They would have to tear me away from those dogs.

I have 3 dogs...German Shepherd...Chow terrier mix and a huge hound rottie mix. Trust me....all heck would happen if they ever did anything like that.

They wouldn't...They kissy face all the other pets...cats, horses, chickens, ferrets, etc. etc...

I'm a believer, that like a child, pets learn bad behavior from...the --so-called adult.

It's true most dogs would not be a threat to a horse, but the ones that are not probably don't learn that from humans, nor can humans necessarily stop them if they prove to have that kind of prey drive. A loose pit bull is dangerous to the whole neighbhorhood, whether he's going after the neighbor's pets, stock, chickens or children. They only have to get loose once, and most will. Maybe Cesar Millan can make them safe, but anyone short of his talent, I don't trust with a pit bull.

My own dogs (lab mixes) aren't a threat to the horses, but the horses are a threat to the dogs... They aren't allowed to be together or someone would get hurt.

My neighbor's dogs (a shepherd and a pointer) get into the pasture occasionally, despite the electrice wire I put up on their side. They mostly come to eat horse-sh__ and explore, but they have in the past played with the idea of chasing the horses. My two mares rolled them all the way home, as they scrambled to get out from under those hooves. I didn't fear for the horses, but I bet those dogs had some aches and pains from the experience.

Glad you aren't our neighbor. Shooting any dog on sight is definately on the paranoid side, most dogs do not become instant killers when loose. We don't allow our dogs to roam, but we have one that will run if he gets an opening and we aren't home, despite our best efforts. He's not hunting, he's looking for us. We worry about him endlessly till some kind soul finds his phone number on his collar and calls, sometimes miles away. There's a difference between people who make no attempt to control their dogs, even those known to be dangerous, and pets that can sometimes get out purely by accident. Ours is no risk to stock or pets or children and even a moderately astute eye would see that. Please don't shoot without discrimination.

About a year ago, I was out riding. Across a concrete canal maybe 10 feet a pit came running up. We had a hard time getting the horses past and dogs had not been a problem. This dog was acting crazy though and looking for a way across. The guy I was riding with, horse spooked past. I backed off until the owner came and got him. If I had been armed I would have shot him in a heart beat if he managed to jump his bank. Scary. I know some people have good experiences with them but I haven't found one that is right in the head.

Farmers and ranchers know by experience that even the nicest of dogs become killers when in a pack, ask those who have had to get rid of their own dogs. My dogs stay in my yard even if the gate is open (that only happens by accident when the grankids are here).

I've seen the cutest little chihuahua cross viciously kill 100 chickens just because she was a dog. Dogs are dogs, they are our best friends but they still have pack instincts and they do what nature calls them to do.

Besides, it isn't like we live in a city neighborhood, we wouldn't be able to shoot a gun there nor would we have any kind of livestock.

I'm with you.

My dog loves anything that breathes.

If I owned an animal that ever did anything like this, I'd kill it myself.

You simply cannot have an animal that is a threat to others.

Poor horse. It doesn't sound good. Just terrible.

Where I live is neither all that rural nor is it city. It's small farms and homes. Clearly, you're within your rights, that's why I said ~please~.

Have you ever shot a pistol or rifle while riding your horse? You may get bucked off and the horse will leave you to the dog. Teach your horse about gunfire when you get a chance.

"I've seen the cutest little chihuahua cross viciously kill 100 chickens..."

I'm an obsessive runner, and I used to run thru the neighborhoods near my house until I found I liked the local medical school track better. A couple of the local yahoos would let their about 5# rat dog loose, and the little POS would go straight for my ankles. I did everything, including doggie treat bribery. It took a large stick across the nose a couple of times, then the little jerk ran the *other* way when he saw me coming.
