Children in trouble for hopscotch
BBC ^ | 8/1/06 | Staff

A group of youngsters has fallen foul of the law for playing hopscotch.

West Midlands Police community support officers asked parents in Spring Street in Halesowen to remove chalk markings after complaints about them.

Several children were involved in the games resulting in several markings on the pavement.

Police said they were also investigating complaints of anti-social behaviour. But mother Lisa Mangan said their action was "extreme".

She said: "With what is going on in the world it is pretty extreme for a few chalk markings on the pavement which will be washed away."

The children drawing chalk markings on the pavement Police deal with "low-level crime" to prevent more serious problems

Her daughter Kayleigh, 14, added: "I think its stupid and they shouldn't be wasting their time up here having a go at kids about chalk when there are other things going on in the world."

In a statement, West Midlands Police said the officer visited the street following complaints not only about large areas of the pavement being left chalked but also after numerous complaints about anti-social behaviour in the area.

They said the feedback from residents has been good and in dealing with what the force called "low-level crime", they could prevent more serious problems developing.

The children washed some of the markings away but said they were determined to carry on playing.

You're welcome. And then: there's mandatory eraser training, and locks for chalkboxes, and....

Hey Britain! We've got this thing over here, you might want to look into it. Takes care of chalk on the sidewalk.

It's called "rain."

See?...hopscotch today, tiddleywinks tomorrow, and who knows what comes next? Probably marbles or some such criminal game....who's running this damn train anyway? What a stupid thing to do to the children there.

Boy, talk about dealing in the minutae. Doncha love nitpickers and busybodies living lives of quiet desperation?

This is how I feel about thread-nazis: (Castrated falsetta voice) You spelled this wrong. Is this really news? Is this really BREAKING news? Stop posting the thread on multiple topics. This should be in SBR. This is not family-friendly. Do you read the posting rules...? This thread is a duplicate--pay attention. This is the third time this has been posted (not realizing it was an update on the ISraeli War or the 2004 Tsunami). I remember the FR when all we talked about was politics, religion...long before these immature people came on board. I'm telling the mods. I'm pressing the abuse button.

You can fill in your own rants...

My kids right in chalk all over the sidewalk, driveway, car, grill, side of the house, whatever they get their hands (chalk) on.

So what. Do they realize there is such a thing as water?

Those self-appointed guardians of the threads (not to be confused with the actual mods) god love em, they're doin the lord's work without the aid of a title! Reminds me of this guy from high school: He had all this CB stuff--even a faux uniform--and would hang out with the local EMS, and followed the cops and firemen around to all the problem areas.

He never volunteered for the fire dept. or EMS. Just pretended. God love that little dork-- telling us what to do and what to say. And telling the teachers when we did wrong.

Last I heard, he worked security in the local mall.

The Key is 'community support officers'..not good enough to investigate real crime but just about good enough to chase children.

Good thing they can't see my driveway. My kids and their friends just completed a hopscotch on it that has 100 numbered squares. I figure, if they're stupid enough to do that in 102 degree heat, let em.

Chalk? I used to have to use stones/rocks to draw the lines. Or rip off some drywall from a construction site. Step on a crack, break your mother's back?

Actually, just got some chalk the other day and was going to draw on my own driveway. :-)

They don't play the way I want them to and I want somebody to make them... NOW.
