Plans to dig up Chinese ship on
Daily Nation ^ | 7/28/2006 | Abdulsamad Ali

Plans to excavate a Chinese ship that sunk in the Indian Ocean off Siyu Island 600 years ago are still on, a diplomat has said... Mr Chongli said the Chinese embassy in Nairobi expected the budgetary estimates to be presented to the People's Council for approval in the next budget, early next year. At the same time, a delegation of Chinese researchers had gone back home to study the historical significance of the ship according to available records... The ship is believed to have hit a rock and capsized near Shanga Village in Lamu.  The head of coastal archaeology in the National Museums of Kenya, Mr Herman Kiriama, said the excavation would mark the climax of the process to unveil Chinese heritage at the Coast. "A lot has been said about the ship that is believed to have been in the fleet of the legendary Chinese mariner Zheng He, but it is still not clear where exactly it sunk and what information is buried with it," said Mr Kiriama.

Uh, good question (heh). I think they're expecting to find the name of the ship painted on the side or something. I wonder if the ship is actually Chinese at all.

Well in those days everything in a sense was unique, The way the boat was built will reveal its origins.

Definitely. Sure would be amusing if it turned out to be Roman-era, but of course it is more likely to be more recent, because a lot of it is left.

= = =

Please keep in mind, the Chinese have typically been chronically obsessive bureaucrats for many thousands of years. They probably have records of said ship in quadruplicate, at least.

more information:
Kenya: The Chinese Connection
The East African
August 8, 2006
Zheng He was in charge of a fleet of ships with about 25,000 sailors on a diplomatic and trading mission to Africa when one of the ships ran aground and sank off Pate Island. The sailors swam to shore, carrying porcelain and other goods from the ship. In time, they married local women, converted to Islam and named the village Shanga, after Shanghai... Historians said fighting later erupted among clans in Pate. Shanga was destroyed and the Famau fled, some to the mainland and others to the village of Siyu on the island... Craftsmen on Pate and the other islands of Lamu practise a kind of basket weaving that is common in southern China. On Pate, drums are more often played in the Chinese rhythm than the African style, and the local dialect has a few words that may be of Chinese origin. More startling is the fact that, in 1569, a Portuguese priest named Monclaro wrote that Pate had a flourishing silk industry.
