The Hobbit Hole XXX - Then world behind and home ahead...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 06/28/2006 10:14:11 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Then world behind and home ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Did you actually get to shoot them off? Did the wind allow it?

We had an unbelievably good evening! The new neighbors, with the pit bull and the big dump truck, cranked up their stereo, "Proud to be an American" and "Courtesty of the Red White and Blue" and the such played while they shot off "BIG" fireworks right out in the street! Their kids were riding bikes and so Steve and I went out and sat in the drive and watched while the jedis rode around out there too. All the way down the street and all around us, big fireworks were going off from the streets and the back yards and kids were riding around on bikes or electric cars or skateboards. Amazing! The whole neighborhood was outside till about 10pm! It was like a spontaneous block party, and I gotta say...the new neighbors got it going!

I kept waiting for an officer to come around passing out tickets, but none ever did!

Well, I think it helped cut down on the close stuff to move the neighbors out and move a friend in :~D

And my other neighbor across the pasture that has been active in the past is a pretty nice guy, but a big "NO WAR" DUer. He's probably too depressed to celebrate his country any more.

Yup! The wind died down and we were able to set off all of the goodies.

The coolest thing was that you could look as far as you could see in either direction and see dozens of fireworks. There was always at least one in the air at any given time.

Alyson woke up a little bit hoarse from screaming. *grin*

Sounds like you and your family had a great time too!

Does it seem to you like this was an usually good Fourth?

Joshua said he's remember it all his life.

Well, it was unusually good - but mostly because I'm here with Ramius. ;-)

The girls really had a terrific time. It was by far the most fireworks they've ever seen. I'll have warmer clothes for them next year so that they aren't stuck in one spot huddled under a blanket. *smiles*

It was not cold last night at all, either :~D Their skins will thicken up a bit for all you Miami folk :~D

People who live on the water always go all out for the 4th. And it's neat because you can see it. I could hear all the fireworks on Black Lake last night, it was not individual booms, more of a constant rumble.

I noticed this morning that the S Korean kids are protesting N Korea....probably the same bunch that protested US in SK.

Here's some pictures of my squash vine borer-stricken pattypan. Made me wanna cry! Here it is before...it was just beautiful and had even gotten much bigger than this, had grown clear across the path I'm in and the path in front of it. It was 10' across at it's biggest.

Now here it is by the evening. Beyond help.

If you look carefully, you can see the borers here, one in the stem, one by Steve's thumb:

Dang, that bites...how big of an entry hole was it. I noticed a couple of days ago that one of my squash has a hole about the size of a pencil eraser...maybe a litte larger because it's oval. I'm hoping that it's not that nasty thing...I dont' know if there is any way to prevent it or get them out of there.

I should have squash in the next day or two...unless...

They grub in when they are tiny...then they grow inside the stem. Look for this tale-tell marker...it looks like a tiny pile of sawdust near or on the stem. That's classic borer sawdust.

There is nothing you can do. Some people try removing the borer and then covering the cut area with dirt. I've tried with no success. The thing just dies so quickly, that usually it happens while you're in the house! One hour it's fine, the next it's a pile of wilted leaves. Very discouraging.

We still occasionally see a gopher steal something. Now that is a sight to see. Day before yesterday Steve and I watched as a gopher took an entire 2' bolted lettuce down into the dirt....zip, down it went. We just laughed...it's just so astounding!

ok, this is just a hole, no sawdust...but I'm gonna check just to make sure. I've heard that you can put a cardboard tube around the base of the plant when you plant it and that's supposed to work.

Our lettuce is back since we put up the electric fence. The deer ate it down to nothing...but it needed ate before it went to seed anyway. My tomatoes still have that black spot, but I've been spraying them regularly so I hope to keep it at bay.
