Scotland's culture minister has thrown her weight behind the bid to make the Antonine Wall a World Heritage Site... Five local authorities are also supporting the bid, which was officially launched in 2003. The Antonine Wall runs 37 miles from Bo'ness, near Falkirk, to Old Kilpatrick in West Dunbartonshire... built in 140AD to keep Pictish warriors out of the Roman Empire after the conquest of southern Scotland... The Antonine Wall was built after the Romans invaded southern and central Scotland almost 2,000 years ago. It became a monument to the reign of Emperor Antonius Pius but was abandoned after just a generation, about 160AD.

I was under the impression that the Antonine Wall was constructed of wood [unlike Hadrian's Wall]. What are they digging up?

Of more intereest to me: Is there any clue where the IXth Legion "Hispania" disappeared?

I thought that the disappearance of IX Hispana has been debunked, or was based on faulty evidence. That some of the confusion was related to their quick deployment to the Lower Rhine or Nijemegen region in 122, and that this was the time of their supposed disappearance.

The Antonine Wall had wood parts, but like all Roman pallisade structures, was mostly earthworks. Regarding the Ninth Legion -- there was a novel many years ago (part of a series) called "Eagle of the Ninth"; the underlying premise was supposedly historical, that the ninth marched north and was never heard from again. Apparently the Ninth did get mauled in Britain, twice, but check out this:
The Ninth Legion

By 180AD all trace of the lecion had disappeared and it is thought to have been lost in action whilst dealing with the Judean Revolt (DIO LXIX, 13) in 132AD. A list of all the legions found in Rome dating to around 161-180AD (ILS 2288), makes no mention of the Ninth Legion.

FR is a World Heritage Site. Okay, I made that up. But it definitely deserves it. :')

They took a wrong turn and ended up in the East End of Glasgow. Unable to speak the local dialect they did not understand the challenge "What the &%£ are you looking at?" issued by 4 members of a teenage streetgang.

They were then dragged up a back alley and kicked to death.
