The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hey, it wasn't my idea. It was donated and the church had to do something with it. I was just telling Cindy since loves paints. It's a western church where people can still ride their horses to church and yes a vet check must be provided first and there is a barn. Tickets are beng sold within the church and I would think some of those people would want a horse if they won it.

Oh lots of people might want a horse if they won it. That doesn't make it a responsible way to dispose of one.

Hope it goes somewhere safe, to someone who won't be getting in over their head or get hurt for a $5 whim.

Raffling live animals is just a really bad idea no matter whose it was, and if it was my church I'd say so.

I finally figured out why I was sitting here sweating all day, and feeling so hot and wore out.....Our AC has quit. Actually Mack figured it out as soon as he got home. I looked at the setting and it was set on 70. I wasn't going to turn it down any farther...I never noticed it was never coming on.

We went to town and sat at the building to cool off. I just got home thinking the house would be cooler now....NOT!...jeez, I may have to back to town, this is miserable....The AC man can't get here till SAT.

Put me down for one:') I have a new critter. Josh bought me a parakeet for my birthday. I have him in that old parrot cage. I keep the door open. He stays in it all day but he comes out at night. I have to hunt him every morning. Kind of fun. I call him Night Walker.

Good Morning.

Happy Friday to all!

Alison and I are going to take a short ride today. Yesterday, we clipped branches along the trails. She rode her little 4-wheeler and I walked. It is a kid's size and will shut off, if you hit bumps and does not have a lot of power. Ever time she came to a rut, I had to push her out. We didn't get too far..lol We wanted to wait until her mom got home from work, to go with us, but it's suppose to rain later.

Good morning:)

I'm stuck between a rock and hard place with Rocky. I don't know why, but the cribbing collar he wears, that is NOT suppose to rub, has rubbed a raw spot on him. It is very sensitive and sore he won't hardly let me even look at it.so I took it off...but now he will crib... Maybe by the end of the day it will feel a bit better so I can doctor it. I may have to put up a temporary hot wire pen to keep him off the panels and trees. I wonder if because of the heat he was sweating under it is why it rubbed. He has worn one for years with no problem. And this is the brand new one I bought this past spring.

Bummer about the rub.... That's too bad. Might have been the heat. Where's the rub, under his neck or over the top?

So what's up with your air conditioner?

We've been trying a little horse psychology here. The horses have always chosen, as the bathroom, the corner of the paddock right by the front gate. They're probably being tidy from their perspective, going in what they view as the far corner of their world, but if we haven't been good about cleaning it for several days, we don't like the first thing people see when they drive up to be big piles of poop.

So last week, I cleaned up all the poop and put the water buckets there in that corner. Wondering, since they don't poop where they eat or drink, if they'd stop pooping there... They did. They now poop a little further back, about 20 feet from the corner. Improved, but not as good as if they went somewhere else, I just cleaned that up and I'm going to start putting there hay there. :~)

I set the sprinkler out there for now, to water down the dust before I put another bale out there. We've been kindof lazy feeding with this crummy local, instead of feeding it flakes at a time, we've been putting out a whole bale or two at a time and letting them pick at it a few days and then put out more. As long as it doesn't rain, we can get away with that.

Anyway, that's my life, managing what goes in or comes out of animals :~\

Yeah, it is, but it's so common around here that I don't think there's any way to stop it. They raffled off 3 or 4 at the St. Jude Trail Ride I went to last month. Of course most of the people there were already horse owners, so it was not as big of a problem. But there's always the chance that a non-horse owner could win. In that case, I'd think they'd be wise for them to sell it to a more knowledgable person. But that usually doesn't happen until the horse is spoiled rotten and gets too hard for Little Johnny or Suzie to handle and then nobody wants it.

I wonder if it would help if instead of removing the poopie pile if you just MOVED it to a spot where you WANT them to go and maybe they'd start going there? I've never tried it with horses, but it might be worth a shot.

Heh... They have other poop spots to choose from that I did consciously ~leave~ there today, because I was thinking the same thing.

People do the same thing when they buy horses . Daddy could go out and buy little Susie an expensive horse, that she bores with. Maybe I'm missing something here but I don't see a big problem. I was thinking, unless it was just the horse for me, what would I do with one if I won. Sell it or give it away of course. Maybe donate to a shelter. There are all kinds of choices. We can't bubble wrap every buyer and every horse though.

The difference is the $5 price. And the fact that it's given without regard to it's skill or the skill of the owner. What do you know about it or what it's training is? Nothing. Has the winner even touched a horse before? We don't know.

People make $5 snap decisions a lot more often than they do $5000 snap decisions.

So far so good, I'm going to keep feeding them there. It's a little bit of a tight quarters being near the corner, more cramped than I like, but they don't usually bicker and threaten over hay, especially pretty bland hay.
