The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Poor guys. We are doing a little better but it's still hot for them. Knats and flies.

You can't see how wet they are?? Is it just that I know they are wet? The spots on Rocky's neck are streaks of blood from fly bites.

In the pictures Harley is in the yard, and Rocky is in his run. I have now swapped them out. Give Rocky a chance on the grass, but he may not make it long. He is running around like a fool...

I guess now that you point it out, I can see that Rocky is wet, and I can see the blood. Harley doesn't look so wet but I'll take your word for it.

The light spot on Harley's back is the only place that is dry.

Fly spray doesn't help much? Would one of those body suits help. It says they don't hold heat in.

Fly spray doesn't last long. I only use it when I ride. Too expensive to run out there several times a day and spray.

The fly suits...I'm afraid they would just get tore up to fast.

It is expensive and I've found out the cheap stuff doesn't work as well. I tried buying on line but you go into a heavy weight item price. My horses are doing ok but I'm having trouble with my dog. We spray the yard but she keeps getting ticks all over. Dog shampoos and dips weren't keeping them off. So...I went to horse spray. I spray her too and wipe her face and ears. Don't know what it does to her but it's working with the ticks.

If you have a fenced yard, get a couple of hens. They are the best thing to keep ticks off dogs:) Hens don't crow so you wouldn't have problems with the neighbors complaining:).

If you don't think they'd tolerate the fly sheets I don't know what to recommend. The masks like we use would keep the face flies out of their eyes, but wouldn't do anything for the biting flies on their neck.

I set a sprinkler out in the paddock today to water the dust down. Pony checked it out.... till it sprayed her :~) Can you see the spray about to hit her?

What eats flies?

I wish Rusty was here to show my horses what 'good' is. They're all cowering out of the spray, and it would feel so good :~)

Beep! Good thing about the Beeper! So did Rocky make it in the yard or did he lose his privileges?

He's back in for the night now. I may give him another chance, but he made me go get a halter to lead him back in with. Harley I just have to throw a rope around his neck and he comes. Rocky started to but then jerked away and ran off across the yard. That makes Grizzly chase him with adds fuel to the fire. But Rocky must have also went over to Harleys run and did his bowing up act and leaning on the panels because they were all pushed out of line. Bad horse....it will mostly depend on my mood if he gets out again or not.

It surprises me that they haven't done a toxin screening or blood work. (Maybe they have?) Something is up, that's for sure. Did they use a brand new container of the weevel poison? Maybe the weevel poison is manfuactured in a factory that manufactures other poisons and they got a contaminated batch? Or maybe the horses are getting into some poisonous plants that no one is aware are on the property? It certainly is a puzzle.

They should be able to test the feed to see if the chemical bonded.

If the guy has been using this chemical constantly over the years, there's going to be buildup in the silo, and buildup can lead to toxcity. A poison is a poison, no matter how dilute it is. The chemist in me really wants to know the name of this insecticide so I can figure out what it really does. I feel like this guy was using the stuff without actually knowing how it really works.
