The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

The OSU vets, didn't do anything to the horse. They said there was nothing that could be done:). It's a major surgery to re break a jaw on a horse. I had been to several vets around here who tried all kind of things and it kept costing more and more money. The OSU vets were at least honest about what would be involved to "maybe" fix him.

My hope was that they would have done it for cost just to give the students some experience. I had heard they did that, and the vet/instructor said they did on things that the students were likely to run up against in practice. But this was such an unusual injury they would probably not see it in their practice so it would not be beneficial, and the cost would be prohibitive even for them to do it...

I appreciated their honesty. The horse was not suffering at the time but was heading for some uncomfortable times due to atrophy in his face/jaw muscles. It was time to put him down.

My bet on his soreness would be it was caused from the pad being worn out and maybe crusty. That sort of thing has probably happened to most riders at times. I don't think i would even bother trying to clean it for future use. I'd just get a new one, and go from there. The chriopractor guy that worked on Harley said my pad caused part of his soreness, and it wasn't even old. Just dirt and hair build up on the pad. I've been putting a navajo under mine now.

Well at least you have a pretty good idea of what caused it. That loose skin will slough off and you probably won't even be able to tell it. I think that pressure sores are the only ones that turn white.

Sure looks awful now! I wasn't gonna bother to clean that pad. I'll give him some time off till that skin heals, and get a new pad a'fore I go again.

It looks to me to not be caused from any ill-fit on the saddle, it's doesn't correspond with where the weight is.

This might be related to what the vet and my dad reported about 'old skin'. That's why he's been getting cinch rubs so easily, old skin gets thinner.

I think I would let it heal pretty good, I don't think the hair has to be fully grown back, then get a new pad and take him on the same ride again and see how he is. That would give you a definitive answer.

You could do what I was told to do with my western pad, which was to put a navajo under it.

You could get a nice cushy pad and put one of those light weight dressage pads under it. The dressage pad could be run thru the washing machine after each ride, That way the more expensive cushy pad would be the one picking up the dirt/hair. Of course that means you would have 3 pads....:\

I was thinking the same thing... a nice solid new pad, either the fuzzy or a felt one, and a thinner dressage pad, or two, so one was always clean.

That's what I do and it sure helps. I'm amazed at the amount of hair that comes off each ride, even in the summer. I get a lint trap full in the washing machine and then again in the dryer. It keeps the smell down in your regular pad too.

Yeah - that's really something, isn't it? Just awful for those horse owners, and the stable.

<> Sounds like a man who had a pizza on his mind when he called you. I went to visit a friend the other night. Her husband works out of the country and came home for a visit. He bought her a bunch of horses to keep her company while he was away. Her idea of country life is where they serve drinks and have a juke box. She is none to happy about tending to horses. There is this one mare that is georguos. She has the dark line down her back like a dun but is a palomino color and white paint.

Well, I'm sure hoping that that practice finishes up solving the problems I've had with Harley coming in sore. I really think it will. Where he was most sore was were the most hair build up on the pad was. Makes sense, that part of the pad was rather rough and stiff.

i won't know for sure tho till I do another long ride on him either here or at a competition. Right now it's just way to hot tho to do a 5 hour ride. I'll be lucky to get in 2 before the heat drives us home.

Charlie was telling me this afternoon, that several horses died this past weekend at a trail ride somewhere around here, and that several riders had to hauled out of the woods due to the heat...

We have 2 horses, 3 dogs, 4 cats, hundreds of koi/goldfish, 2 ferrets, 13 pet mice, many tropical fish/ beta, 1 parakeet, 4 chickens (our newest rescued additions) and the illnesses that I fear the most are the horses.

Eeek. Was this just an organized pleasure ride, or a competitive one?

Me too... they tend to be the most worrisome, and the most expensive.

Just a pleasure ride. He said one of the horses was just very old.

There have been reports of 4 people dying in town due to the heat...It's pretty bad. By the time Chris finished shoeing Harley this morning there wasn't a dry place on his shirt. I really felt bad for him, gave him a tip, which says alot:D

Luckily this is suppose to end this weekend, at least for a few days.

Do I have to do that same ride again? It's gorgeous up there, but ~man~ that's a long ride for us... It was a lot of work for us lazy weekenders :~)
