This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
You're welcome! I like looking at them that big, you can just ~see~ more :~D
Yeah, you can zoom them in if you want to and look at small details. Yours were bigger than Becky's and would zoom in tighter, which was nice, but on the other hand, hers took less time to load up. There's always trade-off's I guess.
If you zoom in on the ones of Mt. St. Helens in particular, you can see better into the crater than you can in person!
They would probably hold up better if you put a "Mustang roll" on her hoof. What that amounts to is taking the rasp and beveling, or rounding in the hoof wall all the way around, but especially at the toe. Kinda like this...

The rounded edge gives nothing for the rocks to catch hold of to start a chip. I've been doing it to all my bunch and they never get chips any more. The only one who does is Bob, who is in shoes, and his hooves chip off around the nails. :-/
Yeah, I was doing that. It was cool. You could see the new lava dome that I couldn't see before.
I think he does that, when the trim is new they look kindof like that, though maybe not so much roll. I like the way that looks!
It was just a pretty hard ride... more'n our usual rides. Her chips are all pretty superficial.
The way the Mustang roll was explained to me was that it was like the difference between having long fingernails that extend beyond the pads of your fingers versus having very short fingernails that are pretty much even with the quick. We've all grabbed somthing with long fingernails, only to have the nail bent back into the quick and hurt. But do the same thing with short nails and nothing happens coz there's nothing to bend back. The other analogy was taking the rounded end of a broom handle and repeatedly pounding it into hard rocky ground and the rounded end just gets more rounded, although a bit shorter. Then take the sawed off flat end of a broom handle and do the same thing and the edges of the flat broom handle will start to split and curl up and eventually you've got a big frayed mess. It just kinda made sense to me that way.
It makes complete sense to me :~D
All we were saying is if Cyn had to do rides like last weekend's all the time, she should have shoes is all. It wears them down. The loose rock is like walking on golf balls and the graveled parts are sandpaper.
Bay wasn't ouchy at all in any of the rocks those mares slowed down in. I wasn't barefoot on the ride and I wouldn't demand a horse be barefoot either if their feet need some protection.
I understand. I'm still experimenting with barefootedness and I guess I have that mindset. You know how that is.
Here's a couple pics I took just now... I know not at exactly the right angle, but I was trying to get her to stand still on the board and hold her and take pictures too (honey's busy)

The chip off that hind is the worse one, and it's not ~bad~... just more wear and tear than we often see on her.
I'm thinking her's took longer to load because her camera is set on higher resolution. I have mine turned as low as it will go to keep the loading time on the computer faster, I don't have alot of patience waiting:).
Becky
I know what you mean about trying to get one to stand still and take a picture at the same time. I had the same problem the other day trying to get those pictures of Hope. It's like you need a clone.
And she's a flibbertyjibbet. :~) At least she'd stand on the board. I think Bay might just blow at it. :~)
I sent that link to Dad so he could browse them all, and he said "Why don't you turn your resolution down?" But I like them that big, so I can crop something out of the middle of it, and still have a nice picture.
Some of them I couldn't even load onto my library. I'm not sure why, but they just wouldn't go. I'm assuming it has to do with size/resolution.
But I got plenty.
Becky
I hope so - let me know if there's one you remember that you don't have. I can size it down a little. - or - look at them in town too, where you have dsl.
Shoot, I never thought to look at them in town while I was there.....
Leave them up for a few more days, and I will.
Becky
Sure thing :~)
I'm in and out most of the time. Call me if you need to talk right away.
My jaw hurts but I'm fine.
