This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Does Tiff have any info on what you should expect from Mia, in a strange place?
Becky
Oh, gaited mules have been a big thing around here for a long time and a good one brings big bucks. But the odds of getting one that is fit to ride are so slim that even when breeding your gaited mares to a good gaited jack, it's a crap-shoot, much less when the daddy is a little sawed-off hairy-ass bugger like this one. There would have been Morning-After shots for all of them if I even remotely thought that he'd been big enough to do his business yesterday. Noooo Ma'am, don't want no little half-ass mules, no way, no how! ;o)
I have seen you do some pretty tricky riding ocassionally!
Alfalfa is high in protein - I think something like 10%, so it is a good complete feed for horses. Horses that are worked hard and lactating mares need more protein so they need grain of some sort.

Becky
I thought I'd heard of them before, but wasn't sure.
What makes it a crap shoot, that they won't gait, or they will be nuts?
Becky
That they won't gait. Inge_Cav had that problem when he bred an old pacey TWH mare that he had to a regular trotting jack, hoping for a mule with a gait somewhere in between. He might have had better luck if he'd used a gaited jack, but still the odds aren't good. You've got to be willing to get rid of a lot of culls to get some good ones and I just don't want to have to deal with that. There's too many horses going to the killers already.
Mia should be fine. She's fairly meek in a herd, she usually gets pushed around by the others. She used to live with the pony, it's possible they'd be happy together, though I wasn't going to start out that way. She's even been turned out here before, when Tiff and I first started riding together, she'd sometimes bring Mia over to turn out with the pony while Tiff and I went on a trail ride, or sometimes would turn Kat out if she was going to ride Mia, so neither would be left home alone. That's been a few years ago now, but we did that a few times.
It's Bay that will likely get all exercised about Mia being here, probably not the other way around.
That will work nicely :~D
Oh, well, that's good. Bay knows the fence line, so you shouldn't have a problem.
Becky
I thought about just leaving the tag that was on it that came from the store, brand, price, etc....but that might be a little Minnie Pearlish, and make me look like an Okie:)
Becky
Hey maybe you would get a gaited mule! I am sure you could get at least a couple dimes for that!
He won't push the fence. He might just keep rushing the fenceline trying to intimidate her like he did Cyn when she arrived.
LOL:)
Becky
Heh - Anything to make it distinctive :~D
We tried that... she doesn't seem to think it's as fun an idea as we do :~)
ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
