This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
My rule of thumb is that if it's strong enough to hold up a car, then it's probably ok to cross with a horse, otherwise I'd just as soon go around.
Sounds like Barbaro's treatment is still very complicated. If the best treatment in the world can save him, he's at least in the right place.
Well they probably have him on big time antibiotics. Hopefully they will kick in soon(without giving him the runs)
Let a bigger horse go first :~)
I also just wanted to say that I know how much you care about him but be prepared. Hopefully he will heal but there may come a time when they need to let him go.
None of that sounds real good does it???
Sounds to me like all those early reports of how well he was doing was wishful, hoping. Not that I blame them.
Becky
For sure lol. What if you are out in the open though? No cars. I see stuff yall cross. What's determines if you go around or forward?
There are tractors and then there are tractors. Only big foot could pull our big truck. HMM. I'm thinking. I guess my rule right now is don't tie a horse to a tractor:')
The bridges we go across are on horse trails and were designed and built for horses. You can tell they're strong. I'd be pretty leary of some kind of home-made pedestrian or plank bridge :~)
LOL!! Now THAT's a good idea. But of course the bigger horse could just weaken it enough that it'd fall in with YOU. ;o)
You have probably seen me post that I like to watch the extreme cowboy racing. It's cool to see what trained horses and good riders can do. All of it is just normal stuff that they might come across on trails or a ranch though. I saw something for the first time last night about the horse sport that I did not like. Trick riding. I know they are pros but these are big animals and I did not like to see a girl and her horse on top of a moving RV with a bunch of cows, or hanging upside down on the side of a horse in a gallop. Made me anxious for them.
So there's that :~)
Well, there are truck parts and there are truck parts. I agree, IF you tied the horse to the axle or the trailer hitch then he's probably not going to break it, but if you tied him to the door handle or the bumper or the tailgate, then all bets are off. ;o)
I've never seen the show... but it doesn't sound like stuff we should all try at home :~)
Rule 2: Make sure water under the bridge that the big horse crosses first:')
Yeah, those trick riders must have a death wish or something. They scare me to death too but I can't stop watching them either.
Yea, they have him on everything I think. On the ESPN report on the web site the Dr. Richardson said that he is eating like crazy and producing lots of manure, so apparently no runs. Hopefully that never happens.
The stuff on the extreme racing, Duchess' team probably does. Just normal things. The trick riding was just scary but as frog said, it's hard not to watch.
Yea, I kinda feel like he won't come out of this. I mean, it is going to have to be a near miracle. But I think it wont be so bad because he can't be in a better place. Dr. R is one of the best vets in the world and he could not have more caring owners and trainer. If I was a horse I certainly would want these people around me. It would just be such a bummer because he attitude has been so good and he knows that people are trying to help him.
