WASHINGTON, May 31 — After vowing to steer a greater share of antiterrorism money to the highest-risk communities, Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday announced 2006 grants that slashed money for New York and Washington 40 percent, while other cities including Omaha and Louisville, Ky., got a surge of new dollars.

Homeland security officials said the grants were a result of a more sophisticated evaluation process

What crucial mistake did it make?

It was after my rook, and missed a bishop check that forced the king into the corner at h8 with two pawns in front of it at h7 and g7. That let me sacrifice my Queen on e8 with check, his rook took my Q, then Rxe8 with mate. Without the mate, he would have mated me the next move.

I had mate in two, he had mate in three!

"I had mate in two, he had mate in three!"

That sounds like the sleeping arrangements on my last cruise. Let me warn you right now -- don't get too inebriated!

I dunno...

I don't read a whole lot of sci-fi...8^)

...I'm usually on the computer a lot.

Right now, I'm running the beta for Office 2007. From what I've seen, this looks like a winner (unlike Vista, which didn't impress me that much)

Suffice to say you play at a higher level than I do; I had to dust off the part of my brain where I stored the chessboard rank/file designators so I could make sense of what you posted. Got it figgered out, though. Good job snookering the artificial brain.

My big accomplishment tonight was getting my linear tracking turntable back up and running. Finally got a replacement belt into it, put a drop of light oil on the motor shaft, gave the whole exterior a general cleaning and fired it up.

Boy! Benny Goodman sure sounds great!

I'm spinning an Everest Records pressing recorded live in Japan in April of 1965 and the kids are just eating it up.

SIDE 1
The Benny Goodman Orchestra:
"Let's Dance" 2:12
"Stompin' At The Savoy" 3:12
"Somebody Stole My Gal" 3:23
"You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me" 2:49
"Sent For You Yesterday And Here You Come Today" 3:01

SIDE 2
The Benny Goodman Quartet:
"Like Someone In Love" 2:38
"Close Your Eyes" 2:59
"You're Blase" 3:02
"Good-bye" 1:57

Anyone who doesn't read science fiction is leading a stunted existence. (It doesn't have to be mine.)

I'll give you an example: A friend was complaining that she couldn't seem to control her girth.

"Some days, it seems the only exercise I get is hauling my bulk around!" She lamented.

"Yes ..." I sympathized, "but just think how skinny you could be if you only weighed more!"

*Hint: The surface gravity of Neptune is 110% that of Earth.*

I had to get a new turntable a few months ago. Got the last one BestBuy had in the region!

Now I'm making digital copies of all my albums.
Doing the same with VHS tapes, porting to DVD.

Remember when you could get a replacement stylus at most drug stores? Shure I do! (pun intended, but you have to be as old as me to get it)

I think I'm running FROM the beta of Vista; and I think I'll KEEP running from the production release, too.

My IT guru's new dual core Intel MacBook may well make an Apple user out of me. The first time he showed it to me he had OSX on the installed HDD and was running our corporate XP Pro core image inside a Parallels virtual machine. Last I saw, he was getting it set it up as a dual-boot machine with XP Pro installed using Bootcamp and OSX bootable from an external USB drive.

We're ALL Wintel at the office, running IBM boxes and laptops, so it was a real head-turner to see him walking around with this slick, white laptop.

Remember when they had vacuum tube testers at the drug store?

Do you remember using them? I always had trouble accepting the results.

"Are you sure?" I wanted to ask the thing.

Neptune doesn't have a surface. None of the Jovian planets do.

Jupiter and Saturn have an atmosphere containing mostly Hydrogen--as you descend pressure slowly liquefies it and eventually gives the liquefied H metallic properties.

Uranus and Neptune have a mix of Hydrogen, Helium, and methane. Their mantles are water-based.

Pluto doesn't fit into the mix, but still has three moons nonetheless.

I'm on a really slow dial up, so audio files don't work so well. :-( Thanks for the link, though.

It didn't impress me at all. Most of the visual effects I could achieve with WindowBlinds; I'm running IE7; WMP 11, and now Office 2007 Pro Plus on my WinXP system (that looks like OS X, replete with icons, top-positioned bar, rollback, and the dock)

Though because of my system, I had to run it in QEMU.

A few other things I'm also putzing with:

-Codewave MyTunes RSS: The ability to remotely access my iTunes library with a web browser.
-Songbird Player: A multimedia player based on Firefox/Gecko.
-Tor/Privoxy/Vidalia: Anonymizer using onion routing, developed in part by the U.S. Navy.

Forgot Sheepshaver...8^)

The ability to run an install of Mac OS classic (from System 7.5.2 through OS 9.0.4)

Currently run OS 9.0.4 on a 1.25GB image file. Now if I can find a copy of Office 2001 for Mac, I'll be in business...8^)

I still have a DYNA FM tuner that's got vacuum tube circuitry. I think my Mom still has the old Bell 3030 Amplifier from my Dad's stereo equipment.

NL, what are you using to get your albums digitized? What's your set-up?

After my 120GB HDD faied and my 160GB HDD with my perfet Ghost image refused to function as a replacement primary drive, I lost all remaining respect for MS.

If you've got to be so anal with your O/S protetion that the user can't even alter their hardware without requiring the services of someone who knows how to trick XP into deciding to repair the installation and has a bootable CD with the tools to make that happen...well, maybe, JUST MAYBE you've gone too far.

MS has gone way too far.

If my HDD bombs out, I should be able to swap in my backup and boot right up with no snivveling from the operating system and ole Bill can just go jump in the creek.

I only maintain an XP partition because of tools I need (Office 03, textbook programs, etc.) While I do have the WINE compatibility layer installed, it only emulates Win98 and for a few, Win2k.

If it weren't for these, I'd probably be running straight Linux, or I'd save up and pay Apple for one of those developer discs (and install OS X).

OTOH, I can test software on XP and run my main iTunes server off of that.

All on a measly 40 GB hard disk.

I've mostly been happy with XP, but when something in your hardware takes a dump and you've got to replace it, XP doesn't want to play anymore. I was to the point of making my backup into a data drive and installing clean on my new 200GB HDD.

Instead I got my guru to help me out, slipstream in SP2, and fool XP into rebuilding itself on the 160GB drive.

Still haven't sysprepped my 200GB backup; no idea WTH I'll do if my 160 goes tits up. Probably better do a little reading in advance, ya think? LOL!

Gotta turn in. Back around 1300Zulu.
