WASHINGTON, May 31 — After vowing to steer a greater share of antiterrorism money to the highest-risk communities, Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday announced 2006 grants that slashed money for New York and Washington 40 percent, while other cities including Omaha and Louisville, Ky., got a surge of new dollars.
Homeland security officials said the grants were a result of a more sophisticated evaluation process

It's actually not a joke...these high deserts have lots of stuff to burn; sagebrush, scrub oak and cedar, and then the pines and aspens as one gets to the higher elevations. The forest service is always looking for volunteers, and some fires start from spontaneous combustion.

It's strange where fires can start - I mentioned to KAC about peatland fires - peatland is basically a wetland, and yet the scrub (usually heather, I think) can burn like hell!
