"Thinking towards next month's home?"

I'm salivating over the prospect of deluging everyone with more of my alleged "poetry."

Carbide cutoff wheels or TiN coated Dremel bits.

Plamsa cutter shouldn't have hardened it any more than hot rolling would have. Of course, if they quenched it after cutting... that would be another matter.

I don't know what they did after cutting it. I do know that the cut edges are deeply blackened, just like the hot-rolled stock surfaces, save where they deburred the edges. reminds me of the surface patina brought on by an oil-quench, actually.

agh.

anyone remember what solution is used to patina brass (or cupric alloys) a deep black? IIRC it is sulpherous, but I'm in no wise certain.

All I know is it's not the above mentioned substance.

Not sulphuric acid by any chance?

I don't think so, but I dunno.

I *could* always google "copper, brass, patina, chemical"

True, Google is worth a try with such things.

Ultra-Blak 420 for Copper/Brass — Oxidizing salt mixture for blackening copper, brass and bronze. Used at a concentration of 2 pounds per gallon of water at temperatures of 200° to 210° F to blacken copper surfaces with a deep black, abrasion resistant finish. It must be used in conjunction with EPI's E-Prep 220 brass activator to blacken high zinc (15% to 35% zinc) copper alloyed surfaces.

probably not what I was trying to remember, but it sounds like it is quite possibly perfect for the task. thanks!

Nosing around a bit more with Google, I also ran across these guys. They sell 3oz. bottles of some of their gun bluing products, so they may have similarly packaged quantities of their antiquing products as well.

LOL!

Congratulations/condolences on your daughter passing her test.

My grandson is currently on his way to Ft. Benning, for Boots, and I've been keeping his mum together. Like, she didn't think he'd ever leave home, right? DUH!

I'm going to teach my kids "Google"; how to create good search strings, actually. As you've likely discovered, varying search strings slightly can pull up widely differing resultant sets. Creating a 'good' search string is almost an art form.
