Madonna defends mock crucifixion

Madonna has defended a controversial mock crucifixion in her stage show, saying it is part of an appeal to the audience to donate to Aids charities. "I don't think Jesus would be mad at me and the message I'm trying to send," she told the New York Daily News.

UK and US church groups condemned the stunt after the singer began a 51-date world tour in Los Angeles.

A Church of England statement asked why Madonna felt "the need to promote herself by offending so many people".

Madonna performed the ballad Live To Tell while suspended from a giant mirrored cross on Sunday's opening night.

Images of poverty in the developing world were shown on video screens, while numbers ticked away to represent the 12 million African children orphaned by Aids.

"Jesus taught that we should love thy neighbour," Madonna told the newspaper.

Upset

David Muir of the Evangelical Alliance accused the singer of "blatant insensitivity".

"Madonna's use of Christian imagery is an abuse and it is dangerous," he said.

"She should drop it from the tour and people need to find their own means of expressing their disapproval."

This is not the first time the pop star's concerts have upset the Church.

In 1990, the Pope called for a boycott of the Blond Ambition tour, in which Madonna simulated masturbation during Like A Virgin.

The video for Like A Prayer also brought condemnation from groups claiming it was blasphemous.

The Confessions world tour will reach Britain in July.

So, Her Majesty doesn't think Jesus would be upset that she is mocking what He accomplished for us on the cross? Man, is she ever lost.

Madona Who?

I'd be hard pressed to recall ever watching a video of her or listening to one of her songs.

Apparently she is of the same belief system that thinks "Jesus loves me so much he would never disapprove of anything I do, especially since my motives are so good and more important than whether or not my actions are wrong."

So, she's up on a mirrored cross, singing something, and that is an appeal to give to charities...? What song is she singing? Pink Floyd's "Money"?

Material Girl was a pretty decent music video in the 80's.

Mock Jesus and then speak for him. This woman has a special place in Hell reserved.

She charges $200 and up for a ticket, then asks for donations to charity. Sheesh!

Bulls**t. She should have the courage to say she's co-opting a symbol of ultimate sacrifice to get publicity. She's now a coward along with everything else.

Why doesn't she use her "talent" to garner charitable donations from her Kabballah associates? And how does Jesus fit in to her "religious" preference?

The ironic thing is, when she tried, she could come up with some pretty decent stuff - I especially liked her song 'Borderline' and 'Live To Tell' and the videos that went with them.

Unfortunately, she decided she would make her fortune mocking Christianity and attacking society's morality.

How sad she chose the path she's on.

Offend the masses with a PR stunt, then prolong the PR stunt by defending it. Man oh man, Madonna has perfected the art of selling herself! Best yet, Madonna now professes to speak for Jesus, even though she's rejected Him as the Son of God.

I bet serious Kabalah believers are embarrassed Madonna has turned their ancient mystical beliefs into Kabalahlah.
