'Da Vinci' unlikely to pass Egypt censors By Betsy Hiel TRIBUNE-REVIEW Sunday, May 14, 2006

CAIRO, Egypt - "The Da Vinci Code," the film based on Dan Brown's best-selling book, will not be seen in Egypt when it is released worldwide Friday.

Nor will the long-awaited film play in Jordan or Lebanon, which banned Arabic translations of the book.

Being a Catholic, I really don't think anyone should see it....there are some Catholics that are not as solid as they should be in the beliefs, and something like this might cause some problems later on...

Yes, I know its fiction, poor fiction at that, but I personally think it belongs in the 'trash can' for tomorrow trash pick-up....

I've read the book. And
I expected to like it,
since I had enjoyed

the books that Brown used
as background material.
But I found Brown's book

not only just dull,
but, ultimately, kind of
gutless since the end

doesn't really say
what was really going on,
just lets readers guess.

I was never interested in it, but now with all these bannings I think I might. Im looking forward to seeing the movie too. I think all this controversy does is help sell the movie, and more books. Im sure the producers cant stop smiling about all this free publicity.

Seriously, this is kinda like the reaction to the "Satanic Verses" without the fatwa. Christianity is hardly threatened by this book.

Huh. As a reader of mysteries, I found it fast moving and quite interesting. His plot was far more complex than most of the mysteries written, but flowed a lot better than did Angels and Demons.

As for his ending, I do think that served two possible purposes. First, while building what most here consider an anti-Christian theme, his protagonist saw that whatever documents were there might endanger the Church and did not want that. And second, let's face it, makes for a great sequel....

Agreed, I didn't really have any interest until the controversy really heated up, and finally broke down and read the book. Found it to be great, and immediately after, read Anels and Demons.

I have about a week left before the movie opens; that may not be enough time. Ill probably just go to see the movie.

Maybe I will read Angels and Demons though; I heard thats even better than TDVC. And Ill bet after this movie is a big hit at the box office, which seems like it will be, that they'll start production of an Angels and Demons movie. Then we can have this controversy all over again in about two years lol.

BTW I read an early review of the movie (the only one Ive seen so far) and the guy said its really good and is guaranteed to be a big hit.

Angels and Demons is a bit slower than DaVinci Code. Both very interesting and fun reads. Enjoy.

"Angels and Demons is a bit slower than DaVinci Code. Both very interesting and fun reads. Enjoy."

QFT.

I read A&D first and then DVC, both of which I found to be great books, I like they way the entire book basically takes place over a 24 hour period or so, which makes it really action packed minute-by-minute.

All four of hus books are like that, they time span that goes by in all the books is usually about one day or so.

I found the first 2 but not nearly as interesting as the second 2, it's clearly his writing took a big leap forward when he wrote Angels and Demons.

Of the other 2, I like Deception Point the best... also a pretty good read.

...flowed a lot better than did Angels and Demons.

The blatant errors (guns transmuting between revolvers and self-loaders, other spoiler-related goofs) and total fiction in that book leave me with no temptation to read this one!

Plus, there's been enough presented in the popular press about the idiocy of this one (more blatant poor scholarship) that I'd guess only the very ignorant would expect much of it other than a thinly disguised fiction. Am I right?

Angels and Demons

Just pretend that the book takes place in another universe, where our laws of physics don't apply, and you'll be fine. :-)

Frankly, I didn't even find it entertaining...way too predictable and goofy, IMHO.

"Thanks for the info. Will try his other 2."

The other one, besides "Deception Point" which I mentioned, is called "Digital Fortress".

Not sure of the popular press, but the "idiocy" has certainly been expounded on in fundamentalist circles. I didn't know what to expect from it, as I had never read any of his works, but was quite pleasantly surprised. He takes a few very controversial religious views and builds a great mystery around them. I've read a lot of mysteries from most of the popular writers, but Brown is right up there.

Guess I'm one of the 44 million "very ignorant", as my expectations for his next book are out of sight! Funny, I've not seen any condemnation of State of Fear which, to the left, has similar connotations.

But for those who cannot take this work of fiction for what it is, and whose faith may be a house of cards, I definitely don't recommend it.

That's the funny part. People think they are being bold by attacking Christianity. Let's see these people really be bold and attack Islam... I don't know if you've heard about this, but there is an "othercott" of the Da Vinci Code in the works.
