The victim, a single mom who turned to exotic dancing to support her two kids, attends North Carolina Central University, a mostly black college in Durham.
She plans to keep a low profile until the students go on trial to avoid inflaming tensions in the black community, where opinion is running heavily against the privileged students.
One of the most hurtful things for the woman about the media circus surrounding the case, the cousin said, is the tendency to assume the worst about her because she is a stripper.
"She's a victim and she's a human being," the cousin said. "Her occupation couldn't justify that a crime like this was committed."

One of the guys in my office was in the airbourne. I asked him the other day and he said that it takes 60 sec for a "stick" of 10 paratroopers to exit an aircraft. Those guys are geared up and standing in the door. I was trying to get a timeline on how long it would take a bunch of undergrads to clear a house.
I'm not sure the east-west bus would be running that late on a night during spring break. Could be though.
That is exactly how it will be perceived by a Durham jury- these hotshot white lawyers from out of town trying to crucify this poor black girl who went to school with their cousin or whose mom goes to their church. It has to be handled very carefully or it could backfire into making the jury feel sorry for the stripper.
I wish there were some way for the defense to INSIST this thing go to trial, where the whole world will be able to see this farce get played out.
Because of course, juries already do the right thing. I mean, that's why O.J. just finished the first decade of his life sentence for killing his wife and Ron Goldman, right?
These two, maybe eventually three young men are facing at a minimum 12 years in prison if they are found guilty. The last thing the defense attorneys wants is to go to trial and put these guys fates in hands of a jury that may very well be biased toward their race and wealth. Seligmann appears to have an air-tight alibi, and the D.A. appears to have little to no evidence. There is no reason for him to have to go to trial and put his life at risk. Even a hung jury would leave a stigma of possible guilt.
That would be Reade...the guy with the alibi....
There are lots for sale on ebay and yes there are lots of bids.

Smart boys, good young men sometimes do stupid things no matter what you teach them. It is the testosterone factor. In reality, it could be any of our kids.
Boy, ain't that the truth....I thank my lucky stars everyday that my sons chose wisely.....but only by the grace of God, because it could have been the other way around...
YOu're right, of course. I'm speaking from my own emotional standpoint of wanting to see them have their day in court to fight back, but the reality is they probably never will be able to really fight back, in court or out.
This has not been a level playing field from the beginning, and unfortunately the courtroom probably won't be one either.
Thanks

And, when it is proved that they were falsely accused, I will be just as outraged.

Yeah. I bet you'll be out there in front of the house with all of the protesters carryings signs that say: "We're Sorry! We Were Wrong!"
Noway in hell this is staying in Durham. Judges move high profile cases.
I think people still think there is the heated atmosphere like the first couple of weeks.
I think it's been turned around, and while a large portion of the AA community might think these guys should be put in jail, I doubt they'd riot (SEE Rodney King Verdict)if they weren't.
I feel some air has left the zealot activist balloon since the DNA results and alibi has come out via the media.
The time stamp on his pic is 11:09:25 PM....His hand is already scratched.

"To me, the other very important mystery in the case is what exactly the SANE report says."
I would love to know what that report says as well. I keep hearing people say that they think "something really bad happened that night." But, it's more and more appearing like a simple dispute over money, and the worst things that happened that night were a heated exchange and a drunk stripper falling down the stairs ("she's just a stripper"). She didn't spend very much time in the hospital so her wounds from falling down the stairs couldn't have been that severe.
If the SANE nurse just noted "swelling," it make me wonder what people think "really bad" happened that night.

She certainly got a sweetheart deal. Almost sounds like somebody was paid off or blackmailed.

Or she turned a trick for the DA. Happens all the time.
What? I don't see any scratch.
He's a middie--I bet he has tons of scratches and bruises--and an alibi
I can't visualize 30 drunk guys "disappearing" onto East campus during Spring Break. Even if the buses were still running after midnight, they only would run every 30 minutes or so. Then they all got off the buses and hiked down to Eden's (new dorms) and no one mentioned and no one overheard any of them say anything throughout this (at least 30 minute) return to new dorms trek from Buchanan to Edens? I can't imagine a orderly dispersal like that but maybe the culture has changed dramatically with all the drinking being accomplished off campus.
At at this point, that's really all the DA has to "prove" a rape occurred.
My guess is there were lots of bored guys leaving in stages.
I bought one on eBay yesterday for about $25. (It was probably worth half that in February.) I wish that the boys could get a part of the sale, but I don't think the seller is gonna let that happen. ;)
