Microsoft, Linux and Patents
AP Lawrence ^ | 04/05/2006 | AP Lawrence?

At http://www.no-lobbyists-as-such.com/florian-mueller-blog/ballmer-linux/ we're reminded that Microsoft wants Linux dead. Ballmer is once again making noise about patents.

Unfortunately, Microsoft likely does have patents it could use against Linux. IBM can probably be replied upon to fight back on the side of Linux with its own patents - supposedly they've called Microsoft patent bluffs in the past just by pointing out that they also have stacks of patents and idle lawyers ready to look for violations by Windows code. However, Microsoft might now be willing to risk the battle.

Microsoft is not in a happy place right now. Vista is delayed, and both Apple and Linux are gnawing at its toes. The increasing interest in virtualization and particularly in package/OS bundling like VMware Player is a bumpy road for Microsoft because of OS licensing. Microsoft doesn't want its OS sales pirated, but it doesn't want to miss out on that market either. Linux apps can be shipped with a free OS; Microsoft apps cannot.

...and you've not given any reason why they can't or won't do the same with Red Hawk.

Let's see if I understand this right: anything you post here is true unless someone proves it false?

Is that what you believe?

No, obviously I'm the only man here capable of discussing these subjects intelligently, and spend significant time weeding out the constant lies like those from FLAMING DEATH that the license doesn't allow it when it obviously does, else there would be no legal copies of "Red Flag" in china.

Software patents only make the lawyers rich and hurt the consumer and small developer.

Are you Chinese?

Hardly. I know of several freepers who have turned completely against linux since all the lies started getting exposed, and the lies are only getting worse. One of them even used to post pro-linux articles, but I'm sure he never will again. And several that did actually try it anyway, were not impressed.

If you like it, fine, just be aware of the dangers and don't go pushing it with lies everyday.

How about this - your attitude is so petulant and putrid that I tried a variety of Open Source solutions. And horror of horrors for you - I liked them. I even started distributing Linux CDs to my friends. I contacted Ubuntu and they sent me a huge packet full of them, and I've been distributing them like Santa Claus leaving presents under trees. And they have liked and enjoyed the Open Source solutions I've shown them.

So congratulations, because you didn't have the good sense to shut up, you created at least one person who is the anti-Christ in your world - an Open Source believer who is preaching the Good Word.

Oh, and muhahahahahahaha.

Ivan

Troll? How so, by exposing flamer's lies?

If it's not classified what's stopping the chinese from making their free copies like they do with Red Flag?

Can't they even do that with this, that comes direct from the NSA?

http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/

While I'm sure you think the NSA providing our adversaries with free software is a great thing, I have serious concerns about it.

When was that, when you joined FR back in '95? [LOLOL]

...and the lies are only getting worse...

We've taken notice of you on that score. You're quite prolific.

Your behavior on tech threads is the very embodiment of the term "troll."

Really? So you read the "ubunto manifesto" and liked it? Why are you making free copies for your friends? Why don't you just make a donation to the U.N. instead, since they have a whole agency dedicated to spreading open source now. If you donate enough, they might even let you sit in on Richard Stallman's next speech there. I'm sure he has lots of terrible things to say about wealthy Americans and U.S. software companies, so you might really enjoy yourself.

I think you should take it up with the NSA. Be sure to write them many many letters, and use the same petulant putrid meth-addled tone you use here.

They'll just love you for it.

Most excellent Ivan!  I can't tell you how many copies of Knoppix I've spread around. Live CDs are an excellent way of showing off the capabilities of open source systems.

Well, he seems more than happy to make it about him if it keeps it away from the original topic.

Linux apps can be shipped with a free OS; Microsoft apps cannot.

Why not? After all, they used to do that. Anyone could!

Prior to Windows 3.0, the Windows SDK included a "Runtime" version of Windows, which could be tied to the app.

My first Windows app -- Word for Windows 1.0 -- came with that runtime version. If you installed Word onto a DOS machine, when you ran it, it would automatically load the Windows 2.0 "Runtime Version". When you exited Word, the Windows runtime would likewise shut down.

They chose to stop doing that when they came out with Windows 3.0. I see no reason why they couldn't do it again, if they so chose.

Why would the UN need our money, bill gates gives them enough for anyone on this board..

That's a good idea--I wonder if any other distros do this ;)
