Do you happen to know how to find out if someone won an award for their performance in a musical? I would go to the website of the organization that hands out the awards to check if they list their winners. In this case, I'd go to Google and search on Ovation Awards, then go to the website of whoever hands them out.
Should she even be in AI this year? Isn't she already beyond AI????
Well, AI supposedly has always been about finding the best undiscovered talent in the U.S. I guess it depends on exactly what their contractual rules are and how they define "undiscovered."

Here's a link to the page that shows the winners. Their names are in red. Someone named Kristine Remigio won that category for her work in 'Miss Saigon.'

Okay, thanks. It just struck me as odd since Jennifer Hudson, (I think that is her name) went from AI to musical theater. Katharine seems to be going in reverse.
Now, let's say that Taylor Hicks had been nominated for a Grammy last year. I would think that he wouldn't fit the criteria anymore. But, as you say, it depends on their definition of 'undiscovered'. Being nominated would seem to equate with being discovered though, imo.

Thanks, though the whole thing strikes me as 'unusual'. No wonder Paula keeps telling McPhee that she is ALREADY a star!

By that criteria, Lisa shouldn't be there either for her "Lion King" experience, or Taylor for his prior fan base, or Kellie for her pageants, or Ace for his UPN thing, or Chris for having a popular band... They all had stepping stones, didn't they?
Undiscovered means not a household name, doesn't it?

Undiscovered means not a household name, doesn't it?Contractually speaking, "undiscovered" can mean anything the AI powers want it to mean.
Jennifer Hudson was working professionally before going on AI. She was singing professionally on cruise ships. So she certainly was "discovered" at that level of show biz.
Jennifer was on AI two years ago, made the final 10, but got voted off somewhere around 4th place. It's was only after Kelly Clarkson's 'Breakaway' album became a huge hit that people like Jennifer and Diana seemed to get second looks from areas of the entertainment business other than the recording biz.
That could be a coincidence, but a lot of people don't think so. Kelly's success brought a level of credibility to the show that no other modern reality show could possibly claim. In any case, good for Jennifer and Diana. I wish them well.

Contractually speaking, "undiscovered" can mean anything the AI powers want it to mean. Exactly...their show, their rules.
Kelly's success brought a level of credibility to the show that no other modern reality show could possibly claim.
She's really paved the way, hasn't she.
In any case, good for Jennifer and Diana. I wish them well.
Wish I could see "Hairspray" with Diana's special spunk!

How's the crew on Nashville Star this year? I wasn't impressed with last years crew...and Erica Jo...should be Erica Blow.
I heard Sara Evans (the Real thing....not the pickled subsitute) is singing next week. I'll have to check it out just for that.

Wish I could see "Hairspray" with Diana's special spunk!Me too. The girl is terrific, in my opinion, and should have won. But that year the AI powers wanted an R&B female and really got behind Fantasia. But it probably worked out really fine for Diana in the long run, because may very well be on her way to a solid Broadway career.
Same with Jennifer. Who knows why the judges preferred Fantasia to her. But she might have the last laugh if she does well in the movie. Hollywood musicals are a nearly dead genre, but she could head to Broadway. She might even have a 2nd shot at a recording career if the soundtrack from the movie sells well.

Hi Tony. I haven't been watching Nashville Star this year. I really didn't like how they pretty much rigged it for Erica Jo to win last year. Barf!
I heard Sara Evans (the Real thing....not the pickled subsitute) is singing next week.
"Pickled subsitute," LOL! Yeah, the rumor is the genre next week will be country. Not confirmed yet, though.

Diana's support of the troops really touched me, as well as Kelly's.
I hope Diana will still be starring long after folks say "Fantasia who?"

Worse, if you can believe it. Leann Rhimes was horrible last year as host. Wynonna Judd is this years host (with Cowboy Troy playing a kind of "co-host". It's bad. Boring and bad.
The NS production values have just gone downhill year after year. The sets this year make you think you're in a honky tonk (maybe they are).
Phil Vassar and Anastasia Brown are back as judges. Phil loves everything ("you nailed it, man" or "you did great, man") and Anastasia is inconsistent, at best. The 3rd judge is a rotating "celebrity" judge. So far they've had Big and Rich, Larry the Cable Guy, and some WWF wrestler.
Talent is excellent, but all the guys are real close to the same style.
Guest stars have been okay, Big and Rich the first week, and Kenny Rogers this week. I don't remember who did the 2nd week.

Do you know that both Fantasia and Jennifer were up for the lead role in that film, and that Jennifer beat her out. LOL!
I wonder if Larry, Moe and Curly -- as someone on another board calls Randy, Simon and Paula -- really know what they're talking about sometimes. They didn't remember Kelly Clarkson until she wowed everyone singing 'Respect' during the round of 32 that first season. They were solidly behind Tamyra Gray that year. They didn't like Clay (apparently Moe still doesn't). They didn't like Jennifer or Diana or Josh Gracin. But these are the AI alumni who are making it out there on their talent in the real world.
